Have you done one? Would you? Is it worth it? Better than a book trailer?

Is it a must do for book promotion since it could be a free advertising tool to put together?

Podcast:

“radio”-style talk and music shows to listen to on your iPod or other MP3 player every day

You can create one and upload it for free to iTUNES to be downloaded by anyone

I'm looking at doing this for some short stories. A big plus as I see it is the ability to get it into the iTunes store where the potential audience is huge.

Excellent. I read of a science fiction author who serialized his books on podiocast. Now he is published. Sometimes you have to think outside the box.

Would you be able to let me know his name? I'm aiming to have something up at the end of the year but still looking at how other people have approached it. Thanks

But here's the thing. Sure, you can make a podcast and load in on iTunes. But what you need to realize is that just by doing that isn't going to be enough. You still need to promote and let people know its there, or no one's going to download it.

I doubt that a one off promotional podcast would have much effect, that is like asking people to download an advertisement. Most people listen to podcats by subscription, so I would suggest trying to get a guest spot on an established podcast. I subscribe to about twenty and about half of them relate to books. But they have to be interesting to me as a listener for me to sign up. So unless people are waiting agog to know about you book, IMHO you will need a better hook.
