It's not my poll, but I think the best rock bassist should be someone whose career was/is in the rock genre. Jaco may be one of the best players of the instrument ever, but you can't call him a rock bassist. That'd be like putting Pat Metheny in the best rock guitarist poll, or Eddie Van Halen in a best blues guitarist poll.
That was pretty much my point earlier.
I think Jaco can be nominated (well he has), but I wouldn't vote for him, because, as you say, rock was not his forte.
Well, it was admittedly his forte when he played it.
The best rock keyboardist was Beethoven.

Lock thread.

:D
But Bach was the best composer for guitar.

I have a soft spot for Geddy Lee since he's from my adopted home town. His mom used to own the variety store on Main Street. He was called Geddy because his grandmother couldn't pronounce Gary.

I also like Jaco Pastorius because he inspired my brother Roger Cormier to play the bass. BTW, my bro really rocks. Look him up.

My ex-boyfriend played bass & he still owes me for the money I lent him for a standup bass. That was 30 years ago. Boy, the interest on that loan could pay off the house!
