Hi History gurus!
I have a problem:
My novel is set in Victorian England (as some of you kind critters already know
) and I want my MC to swear occasionally. Not the kind of nastiness you hear in gangsta rap, just ordinary swear words that people might let slip if they, say, bang their thumb with a nail, or refer to someone who is the son of a lady dog.
Unfortunately, I can't figure out what would have been a swear word in those days, which doesn't sound either too modern, or far too benign.
My MC is edgy and I don't want this aspect to be lost through her continually saying things like "Gracious" and "Heavens!".
Oh, and before you go ahead and say "Victorian era women don't swear" -- well, mine does swear... or at least, she wants to but doesn't know the words
