Our book is just about ready to come from the publisher but now I am worried that it will not get noticed. It is a light travel book. Any ideas?

What have you done so far--what has your publisher done?

At this time it is still at the publishers. They said they would be sending the proof this week. As far as actually selling, it will be listed on Amazon.com. I would like to find a way to sell enough books to support the publishing of my next book. I think, because we live in a small town that we may be able to have a book signing also. This is my first try at this but my love of writing pushes me to continue. Thanks for any more ideas.

What is "light travel?" Is it a travel memoir, a how-to, a cruising guide? The content will help determine how to pitch it, but here are some obvious ways to push it:
Send a pitch and a professional-looking press kit to appropriate travel magazines and newsletters, and travel writers at local and regional papers. Usually weeklies and smaller dailies are desperate for content and also are willing to feature material by and for local people. Make sure you pitch your book with a news angle, not a "this is my new book" angle. For example, a travel book about going to the Caribbean could piggyback on a pitch about how although the hurricane season has been the worst in years, the Caribbean was really unaffected--and then tie your book into it somehow that way. Be sure to include an excerpt or sidebar or some kind of material from the book that can be immediately included in an article.

Amazon has some merchandising programs you can do to promote your book, but they are pricey. One thing that doesn't cost anything, though (it didn't used to, anyway), is the "look inside the book" feature, which allows people to browse specific pages.

There are LOTS of travel web sites and enewsletters that are open to receiving press releases. Find them and contact them. Offer review copies.

You can also offer to trade dead ad space in smaller pubs for a percentage of sales generated from the ad. It's pretty easy to do and benefits everyone.

Participate in forums dedicated to your topic and mention your book as much as possible.

Hope this helps.
