Wistful Question.

I wasn't sure if I should put this in Ask the Editor/Agent or somewhere else so I'm just going to put it in my genre.

Now, I wondered if this were a possibility among NEW writers. The only person I've seen really do it is Nora Roberts and I am so far behind being her it's a nonexistent comparison.

I wondered if it's typically possible for a newer writer to submit a book that is really three separate kind of short stories, rather than submitting them as novellas.

I have this idea where I want to write a love story for each of the nine muses, a kind of bored princess sets out into the world to find her someone to share a life with tale. I wanted to do three per book, each about thirty-thousand words. Would this be wise or should I just do nine novellas? Or is there another place in the Romance world for a project like this?

Depends. Kensington Aphrodisia puts out collections of novellas (usually 3 in the 20-25K range) by single authors. The most recent is Jackie Barbosa's Behind the Red Door. Fabulous book!

I'm not sure if there are publishers who put out non-erotica/erotic romance/steamy novella collections though. They seem to be common among erotic romance and erotica. I'm looking at my shelves now and not seeing anything that's just straight romance. I could be totally wrong, of course. There might be loads of single author novella collections and I've just never picked one up!

Still. You'll never know if you never try, right? Write what you're inspired to write and worry about the market later.

Sounds like a perfect project for e-publishing to me. They'd probably publish them one at a time, though, rather than in groups of three.

Harlequin has done it with their Mira line and their Love Inspired Christian Line. I'm not sure if you have to be established first.

Yeah, it would be a good project for an epublisher. Depending on the on pub, they could release them individually in e-formats, and then group them all together for print.

Love Inspired doesn't handle novellas unless they've changed their set up very lately. Their stuff is considered short contemporary or short historical. Barbour will sometimes do a novella collection, but they're very restrictive and only work with authors they already know and work with for collections.
