My novel originally topped out at 57,000 words, but then I started writing some sequel stuff, since I didn't wrap up every thread.... So I have 10,500 more I can add so far, and going.

If I end up closer to 80,000 words, is that still okay?

Depends on your pub. Read their guidelines. They all want varying lengths. Most won't even look at a mss. unless it falls into their qualifiying word length. HQN American line wants between 55-60,000 words. Avalon wants 45-60,000 words, and Sourcebooks won't look at anything less than 90,000 words (or maybe it's 80,000 words, can't remember) Medallion wants 80,000 and up, etc... Point is, they all vary. Best to keep your eye on your pub specs and adhere to them, if you want to see your work in ink.

I have heard, however, that there is a little more lee-way with e-pubbed books.

What wanna says. Except there is sort of an upper limit even for single title. That would be about 105K, unless you get permission from the editor. It's because publishers buy cover stock in pre-cut sizes and if it's longer than 105K, it won't fit in the stock cover for 100K (the typical single title size.) Up to 105K, they can change fonts and gutters (margins) and move around text to fit. Once you're established and you're selling through, you have the option to write longer than that. My last one came in at 138K and our editor had to get permission to buy special cover stock to hold it. The extra cost cut down on our promotion budget by a little bit until the book proved itself.

So yeah, there's a limit---at least for a debut book. :)

Right. Okey doke. I wasn't planning on it going nearly that long. :)

I don't have it targeted for any one place right now. Still trying to get an agent. But I figure if I had a bit more on, then it leaves some editing wiggle room.

Thanks, guys.
