I really need just basic information--names, marriages, birthdates and death dates--for the family of Comte Beugnot, who lived from 1761 to 1835. I can't for the life of me find information about his mother, his wife, or his children aside from his son Arthur. He had a wife but refers to her simply as "my wife" in his memoirs (*rolls eyes*) and to his daughter as "my daughter" (*again with the rolling of the eyes*).

Does anyone know where I might be able to look for this info?

Have you tried the Rootsweb, Worldconnect website? It offers an advanced search feature that you can enter known (or suspected) information like approximate birthdates, places of birth/death, etc. You could start with him (or the son) and see whether anyone lists the wife. That site is my favorite of the genealogical sites.

If you have a surname and given name for him you could try the LDS website (familysearch.org). They might have a record from their microfilmed files.

Genforum is another possibilty. They have sites for last names, countries and provinces - I think they might even have a royalty site.

There is a website (name escapes me right now) for royal family genealogy. You might be able to track it down using a Google search on the Comte Beugot (put those words in quotes to keep the search terms together). Google itself also frequently comes up with some decent sites you'd never find if you tried.

Hope those help a bit. If they don't, let me know and I'll do some more digging. I used to do a lot of genealogy so I still have a lot of bookmarks. Puma

I usually use ancestry.com, I think it was their "world tree" feature, that linked everyone else's research in one place. But as mentioned above, google provides quick links to what you're looking for elsewhere.

I shy away from ancestry because of the $ attached. There are a lot of free sites with most of the same information. You just have to find them. Puma

Dang, this is much harder to find than I'd anticipated. I've been scouring all those places and others for nearly two hours, and nothing. One sight had Jacques Claude as a female and his son as his father, haha. Trying to navigate some French sites isn't so fun, either!

I have the nastiest feeling that the information is buried away in some church or archive in Bar-sur-Aube, France . . .

Yes, indeed, I've been reading the memoirs (he cracks me up sometimes, btw), but he doesn't get real specific with names or dates for the most part. In fact, he mentions a "wife" and a "daughter" but no names as far as I've been able to find so far (I skimmed and I searched the Google books text).

I found one of the websites I couldn't remember. It's Worldroots.com

This leads into the Brigette Gastel Lloyd data base of nobility by country. Beugnot does not show up for France. Did he by any chance have an original different last name before he was Comte Beugnot? Or, was he a commoner who became Comte after Napoleon?

Edit add - He was a lay peer added after the Napoleonic reforms.

And did you say this is Champagne? Bar-sur-Aube? It might be an idea to look for church records for that vicinity. Puma

Finally, I found what I was looking for! I dug through lot of records and family trees on GeneaNet.com (it seems to have lots of information for free; most of it is people putting in their own family trees).

I found each piece of information I needed: his mother's name, his wife's name, the date of his marraige, his daughter and two sons' names and birthdates. Perfect! Granted, the name was put in as "Jean-Claude" instead of Jacques Claude, but it's most definitely the right person. It only took about six hours of straight research to find a few names and dates!

Good going! It does take quite a bit of digging sometimes, but the payoff is rewarding. I'm glad you found it. Puma

Home - but for how long?
ancestry.com

I've just spent six months trying to stop them charge my credit card every month. I've had to have a new credit card as both my letters and e-mails, and the bank's have been ignored.

When you sign up you are warned to cancel by signing out. I took out a month's access for my daughter and cancelled, but they ignored it!

I mention this because my bank tells me that they have had the same problem with ancestry .com with several clients and the credit card company people called them something very rude!

Ancestry.com

I bit on one of the X Name in History books put together by ancestry that are available on Amazon as a present for my husband. I was outraged. Ancestry has put together a format that will work for any family name and then adds less than a page of information applicable to the family name whoever is buying. In the case of the one I bought - the only "real" family info they had was on my husband's great grandfather and ancestry showed them as going from Switzerland to Brazil! I have the ship's records for the same ship ancestry showed - the ship landed at Castle Gardens, NY. There was no question it was a big mistake - same ship, same departure and landing dates. I raised H with Amazon and got my money back. With ancestry the word is buyer beware. Puma

I almost signed up for a free trial at one of these sites (I can't remember which, I went to a bunch) but balked when they asked for a credit card number. It said the trial was free and would automatically start charging my card if I didn't cancel within the trial period time. I figured that could turn out badly if they didn't honor my request to stop the service. No, gracias.
