Does anyone know anything about Writers Literary Agency? I have been offered a contract with them and want info on them before I proceed. They tell me I need to get a critique done. They said I could use my own or get a referral from them. I asked for a referral and the one they sent me (that they said they use often by the way) is [email protected] . I want to know if this is really legite or if I should run, run as fast as I can. The website I went to to find this company is www.wlwritersagency.com . Any info that anyone has on them would be great. Thanks!

Thanks. I kind of thought so, but wasn't really all that sure. By the way, does anyone know--do you really need to get a critique? I thought that is what editors were for.

No, I have an agent and was never told I needed to get a critique. I have never paid anyone to look over my manuscript at all. My agent called, offered representation, and together we discussed the story and possible changes. We continue to do this whenever we are considering changes.

Once we felt my story was strong enough, we sent it straight to editors at publishing houses. The editors give their opinions, for sure, but they don't change anything unless they decide to buy it. No critiques involved.

I think I saw this quote over on one of the B&BC threads: the only writing Writers Literary Agency is interested in is the checks you'll write to them.

What tomothecat said, but don't assume that an editor is going to fix every problem with your manuscript. If you're submitting to agents and your manuscript doesn't comply with basic grammer or is littered with spelling, punctuation and typographical mistakes, then it probably won't get read. And it's usually a good idea to make sure that your manuscript is as polished as you can get it before sending it out - e.g. make sure that the plot hangs together, that characterisation is consistent, that there are no obvious holes in the story.

There's a Share Your Work Forum here on AW where you can put stuff up if you want a second opinion, or it can be a good idea to try and find a writing group that meets near you so you can share your work.
