I make new playlists for every new writing project and at the moment I'm confounded. What I need is good gothic music preferably instrumental but some choral is okay. --NOT ROCK. Kind of like the music from Spyro --Eternal Night (no I don't play it; my hubby was.)--I love the music--without all the bangs and screams as the character falls off the cliff.

I've used just about all the Requiems I can think of and still haven't found anything that is hitting my mood. Anyone have any suggestions?

Please?

...help a poor pitiful musically ignorant writer...it's good for your soul...

I'm not sure if this is the mood you're looking for, but how about Carmina Burana by Carl Orff?

Got it. Love it. Not quite right. A few years ago, some friends of mine who worked in the kitchen of the restaurant I was managing at the time changed the words of the chorus to "salsa monkeys." The whole darn thing's been ruined for ever since.

I have a large collection of Mozart, Bach, Wagner etc etc etc. I love Holst's Mars The Bringer of War from his Planets. But I've already used those and now they're associated with different projects--if that makes sense.

Makes perfect sense. Hmmm :ponders:.

I agree, Mars is faboo. That whole work is fantastic. I heard it live several months ago and it blew my socks off.

Apocalyptica. Thanks, Jenn.

I'm glad I made sense. *whew* I start to get uneasy when I don't have a playlist. Heck, there's one song I tear up to every time now because when I was writing Asphodel I wrote the death of...

*grin*

Never mind.

OK. I assume you have Mozart's requiem since you mentioned Mozart. How about Gregorian chants. I used to have a CD of that that I loved. Lidszt? Oh, how about 'Night on Bald Mountain' by Mussorgsky?

Yes. Yes. and Yes.

My classical collection is huge. *sigh* That's why I brought up the video game music because it was just the thing I was looking for and it is NEW. The composer is Rebecca Kneubuhl, who's done several video game scores. BUT I. CAN'T. FIND. IT.

My favorite classical music:
Sound of Snow Falling by Taku Iwasaki
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vHOnAYsmz5g
Butterfly by 12 Girls Band (REALLY beautiful traditional Chinese music, all of their songs are wonderful)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_kTPDaculCQ

Music I consider classical from movies and games:
Taking Tea in Dreamland from American McGee's Alice
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a6CbsM_scQA
Davey Jones' Song from Pirates of the Caribbean 3
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3wwcAb23Euw&feature=related

Some songs that aren't really classical but are soft and I loove them:
Memories by Within Temptation
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bhzJO34SCoc&feature=user
Somewhere by Within Temptation
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dbJHSZSTOYc
Pale by Within Temptation
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nNdS8-PEILE

Or anything by Enya. :)

EDIT: I think I just misunderstood your post. *Laughs* Try Nightwish, Evanescence, or Within Temptation. :)

Nightwish:

Already have some Within Temptation up there. :) And Evanescence . . . I don't even know which one to show you first, haha!

And the American McGee's Alice music does have a bit of a Gothic flair to it.

Songs from a favorite game of mine (haha):
(It's Zelda Twilight Princess)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3d357LkWN5U&feature=related
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zspZMOAj2VE&feature=related

I'd also check out the songs that go with some Hayao Miyazaki films, he has some brilliant songs in his movies . . .

And you should defiently check this out:

Celina,

I know you got your answers a while ago, but my daughter's been listening to a band called Sigur Ros (from Iceland) that's dark and mysterious, almost dirge-like. It would work well in slower pacing areas of your novel. There's a video that's kind of creepy, too.
