James Patterson is my hero and the sole reason why I think I can be a writer.
I read his "The Lake House"
A modern day story of genetically engineered children that had wings and could fly.
I am an avid Sci-Fi Fantasy reader and my girlfriend got me this book. After reading the first few chapters, I thought this was some kind of joke. The worldbuilding flat out sucked and even though the writing seemed 'o.k., I could not see what was so special about this James Patterson guy that he should be likened to Stephen King.
As I read more, the book got progressively worse. THere really was not plot to speak off.
But it wasn't until the last three chapters of the book that he became my hero. By that point, the book reeked of bad writing, bad plot, flat characters, and then he actually ended the story with a 'new' character twist that was not set up or foreshadowed,an unrealistic ending, and conclusion that came together like a train wreck. I was so mad I literally threw the book and yelled "WTF that is stir-fried dog shit."
I tried reading another book of his but couldn't make it threw the first few chapters. For the life of me, I don't see what people see in him. I dunno, maybe he started with a few great masterpieces. If so, i'd love to know what those are.
Anyways, his book, "The Lake House" is easily one of the worst books I ever read. And the ending is worthy of a Razz (or is it Razzie?) award.
