Hey everyone. I've been reading the boards the last week or two and have found them to be quite a comfort...seeing people go through the same (often demoralizing) process of finding an agent. I'm a long ago English major, turned sell-out lawyer, who finally took the time to actually write a novel after talking about wanting to do so forever. I've e-mailed my first batch of queries and the responses have started to trickle in: mostly form rejections but two requests for partials, so at least somebody will hopefully be reading a part of my novel. Despite reading about the process, and hearing things like the Notebook getting rejected by all but one agent, I still find myself unreasonably upset when I see a form rejection to my query. Anyway, I'm glad to have stumbled across this place!

Thanks for the warm welcome everyone!

I like my popcorn loaded with butter and salt but only have it at the movies.

Welcome. I hope you don't have too many rejections. I didn't bother with an agent so I don't really know what that part is like but I received about ten rejections from publishers but two acceptances. So keep on asking.

Welcome aboard! It's good to see John Grisham getting some competition!

John Grisham? You mean the guy with cardboard characters? The one who could shift any lawyer-protagonist from any book into another without anybody noticing the difference?

That's why the rejection slips are so discouraging.

You can see that I subscribe to the theory that all really good books have really memorable characters.

Good luck with yours, Round John Virgin!
