Writer's Market/WritersMarket.com, et al

I've read a lot of posts about which books a writer MUST have and am considering purchasing Writer's Market online today. Amazon.com shows 2009 edition will be out later this month, I believe, and it can be pre-ordered now. I see also that you can purchase the deluxe edition and have full access to WritersMarket.com.

How many of you have both, and is it worth it?

I'm contemplating Writer's Digest Handbook of Magazine Article Writing which is unavailable at the moment, and Christian Writer's Market Guide 2008, both of which have good reviews.

Anyone want to chime in with personal views on any of these choices? I want to freelance with articles/essays, starting at the local/regional level and aiming higher.

A recent edition of Writer's Market is a must-have for any fledgling freelancer (and most fledgling writers of any stripe). Although some of the market listings are out of date by the time it hits print (which is why the online version is worthwhile too) the first hundred or so pages are a short-course in how to properly submit work for publication.

Browsing the listings themselves is an education and often generates ideas that never would have occurred otherwise.

I highly recommend you get the deluxe edition which includes access to the updated listings at the website.

I don't know anything about the other two books mentioned.

Thank you for the input. I had already decided to get the latest edition of WM that I could get my hands on, and you have just validated my reasoning to 'supersize'.

I have both the print and online versions of Writers Market. I like having the book because I use it for "working lunches." I go out, bring it with me, and thumb through the magazines looking for ideas to jot down while I munch.

I like the online version because it's so easy to search. In theory it's also supposed to be more up to date, but in practice I find that VERY lacking. For example, there is a horse magazine that has been out of print for quite some time, even though they show it as active and list an "updated" date of several months after it ceased publication.

Overall, tho', both are essential tools for me.

I fully agree with everything aka eraser said. There's really not much more to be said, except -- I haven't looked at Jeff Herman's Guide To Book Publishers, Editors, and Literary agents in a few years, but it was pretty good and probably worth taking a look at.
