I have a BA in English, and sometimes I forget what the letter Z looks like...

The Dvorak keyboard was invented in 1936, after typewriters had been improved tremendously, and jamming was less of a risk. However, it never caught on.

Granted, 1936 was a long time ago, but I think it's still too early to say "never." I was inspired by Holly Lisle's tale of switching to Dvorak to save her hands. I'm tempted to go through the hell of it myself, and have even tried it, but then I got a job (and heaven knows, I'm miserable now).

I'm a ridiculously quick typist, myself, so my real problem is not being able to think of words quickly enough to put down. I can pretty much type as quickly as I can think of the words... :). I've never found myself to generally make the common typos that are seen such as "teh" and whatnot, but I am definitely prone to making posts that are too long!

That's interesting...teh (i won't correct this one :)) brain can think (tink) at something like 400 words per minute (only going from memory here, but it's something absurdly quicker than we can type anyway). But then (tehn) again, writer's block can slow the brain down something terrible, can't it?

That "teh" was on purpose :).

I don't know the speed that the brain can think at, but when I'm writing it's nowhere near that on anything requiring much thought :). When I had my speed measured awhile back, I was able to type at ~140+ WPM with 100% accuracy. I've slowed down over time a little, but I'm still pretty quick at it.

Then again, I have a feeling somehow that using computers since I was just turning 4 years old probably is the reason I am able to type at these rates. I'm 22 now.

I've always been a good speller. But when I got back into writing (after a 10+ yr. break when my kids were little), I was typing my stories instead of writing them long hand like I used to. I got spoiled by the spell checker in Word, and found that when I wasn't typing and my daughter would ask me how to spell something, I'd go brain dead.
Luckily I've remedied that by paying attention when I spelled something wrong and Word corrected the spelling for me. I'd notice the correct spelling, and wouldn't misspell it the next time I typed it.

You just have to pay more attenshun to what your typing.

I think that after 72 years, I'm safe in saying it "never caught on" as anything other than a highly specialized alternative. I know a couple of people who use Dvorak and are delighted with it; I also know a couple of people who speak Esperanto. ;)

But, as you point out re: Holly Lisle, it can be very helpful for folks who have motion-strain injuries and similar.

shh... I'm thinking...
There are words my fingers fumble over. My biggest problem is possibility. I get so lost with all those is, especially because the letters surrounding them are within a few keys of each other. Fortunately, my internal editor is always on the clock (curse her, though, when I'm trying to read a book for enjoyment), and I can generally fix my flubs as I go.

Hi, I make a lot of mistakes and I think it's partially because when I initially write out the story I'm saying it in my head at the same time and sometimes I'll just type phonetically by accident. I'll write "there" instead of "they're" or "bear" instead of "bare." Other mistakes are just for lack of paying attention (like instead of lick, or you instead of your).

North, or nearly so
I know it's spelled 'writing' and not 'wrtting', but since I started writing in December I keep on making silly spelling mistakes.

This has NEVER happened to me before whilst at uni or completing my MA.

Why do you think this is? Is it because of typing on a computer, typing fast or is it because you are so conscious of not making a spelling mistake that you do so?

Am I alone in this?

Probably a case of brain moving faster than typing fingers. When the ideas come thick and fast, I find my grammar and spelling go down the tubes, laughing all the way:Shrug:
