It has been said that the most creative thing about the big Hollywood studios is their accounting.

And, in Hollywood rule one says, "There's no such thing as 'net'."

As far as direct download movies as a distribution format... that's been tried TWICE so far.

The first model was by DIVX TV= which was NINE YEARS AGO. The second is Apple TV which is pretty much dying on the vine. DIVX was actually a better business model, in my opinion.

The problem is Digital Rights Management... as usual.

People already have the ability to buy PPV on cable, so you can see whatever movie is available pretty much anytime you want.

But the average JOE can't stream his film over the cable channel. So he is restricted to delivery over the net.

Someone ALWAYS controls access. In the case of video - right now it's war between the phone companies, cable companies and internet providers. The US has some of the lowest/slowest capabilities in developed nations... because the cable companies want to limit your speed and ability to view digital files.

In terms of direct marketing 'niche' films - those ARE the most marketable projects. Slasher/horror - sophmore humor - fanflicks actionporn - these always sell SOMETHING. There is a ready market for it. But those are seldom entirely financed by writer-producers.

i'd never heard of either of those, wk. that's the problem, the capabilities are there, but for someone like me, who can't even figure out the quote function on a message board, it has to be s.i.m.p.l.e., and then i expect high quality on the lines of what i can get from a DVD.

do-able? i'm sure it is. i believe this because i believe in the old conspiracy theory (of sorts) that these companies who essentially control the rate at which technology comes to us aren't giving us the good stuff until they make sure they capitalize on all the 'advances' inbetween. and by 'advances' i mean technology sitting around for a long time. but, why release it when people are still using and paying for the 'old' stuff?

PPV is too limiting. i want exactly what i want when i want it. i don't want to wade through fifty PPV channels to find a current movie when i want to watch 'inherit the wind.' i want to watch that one episode of 'taxi' where latka puts cocaine in his cookies. and i want it at 3:37 in the morning.

do-able? i imagine so. if 'they' wanted it to be so.

'It has been said that the most creative thing about the big Hollywood studios is their accounting.' i love this line.
