Just now from my sister in Houston. I told her that I had finally finished finished the first four chapters of a novel I have been working on for ten years. "Good! Send them to me. I don't have anything to do this afternoon but read. You know I love that story." She has been reading it since it was a baby. I damn near bawled like one--s6

My fave. professor, any time anything is getting me down: "Just think, this'll be a great chapter in a book one day."

Always makes me laugh.

A co-worker at my newspaper: "I stayed up till 1 AM last night to finish it."

Another co-worker: "My wife loved your book. Now she's passing it around her office."

Noooo! She's supposed to make them buy it! But I was happy anyway.

My best friend called me during what she knows are my office hours the other day. (We'd been trying to connect for about a week, and she got out of work early that day!) She started the conversation with, "If you're in the middle of something, I can call back later. I know you're working. Am I bothering you?"

Just that little bit of respect for the fact that I work at home and the acknowledgment that she was interrupting my work day made me feel so good!

My mom called me when she had finished reading my (recently accepted) YA. She was sobbing on the phone and scared the shit out of me, I thought something awful had happened.
"It's so be-ah-huu-tiful" she hiccuped.
It's the first time I've made anyone cry with my writing.

I had that once also-- I wrote a piece about my sister's best friend, who was killed when they were in high school. It was pubbed in an anthology and my mom sent the girl's mom a copy, and it really touched her. She sent me a photo of her late daughter, one I had mentioned in the story.

I was recently struggling through a chapter and just couldn't write my way through the hump. I was complaining to a non-writing friend of mine who doesn't know the story and had no idea what the chapter was about, and she said, 'You don't have any conflict in the chapter.'

I said, 'Huh?'

And she said, 'You're obviously bored with it. You don't have any conflict in the chapter."

By gum, she was exactly right. I thought through the chapter again and why I was writing it, saw where I could inject it with a bit of drama, and finished it that night.

I've had nothing but active support or benign disinterest when I mention my writing. I have nothing at all against benign disinterest.

My oldest son: "You go, Mom!"

My mother: "When am I going to get to read more?"

My sister: "Oh, I bet this happens and then this and then this..." She was absolutely wrong, but the enthusiasm was great.

My boyfriend is the best. He wants to get married. He says he wants to make enough money so I can stay home and write all day and not have to work an outside job.

He thinks my ideas are crazy but the fact that he said that made my heart sing.

"You're getting really good at the non-fiction thing. Maybe it's time you thought about tackling your first non-fiction book, give it a bit more emphasis than your fiction work?"

From my dear wife, who was right on. I'm outlining and researching as we speak.

Ooh, good thread! I have some really great, supportive people in my life. My husband, especially. I'll be stuck on a plot point and if I talk to him about it, he'll think about it and usually come back with something great for me.

Or the best was when he had a character idea in his head that would fit in my WIP. He was really sweet and asked if I could work this character in and I did and it turned out the character took over and ended up being really awesome.

Then another of my friends read the book and when I mentioned on a myspace blog that I was working on the sequel, she comments and says "can I read it??? I love everything you write!"

So yeah, non-writers can be awesome support systems :)

Oh, another one --this past Christmas our church asked for Christmas poems for a church collection. I turned in two, and my pastor, who has a rather dry humor, said, "These are great. You know, you should try that writing thing.":D
