Gilbert's Royal Digest
Gilbert’s Royal Books, PO Box 925, Station M, Calgary, Alberta, Canada T2P 2J6.
Editor: Paul Gilbert.
A Quarterly magazine.

"Gilbert's Royal Digest is a publication dedicated to the study and appreciation of the Royal Houses of Europe. Offering a rich selection of both historical and contemporary writers and their work, this unique historical journal will appeal not only to the general reader and the royal enthusiast, but also as a general source of information for students, writers, researchers, and historians."
"We accept submissions on any aspect of royal history, including biographies, family memoirs, letters, Imperial, royal or court life, royal residences, interviews, genealogies, and historical anecdotes."
"Articles submitted to Gilbert's Royal Digest for publication consideration should be informative, well-researched and fully sourced. Quotations must be cited and attributed, and a complete bibliography of sources provided. There are no restrictions on word count or length of the article. Photographs may be submitted for consideration, as part of an article, or by themselves if warranted. Please note that it is the applicant's responsibility to obtain proper information and permissions for any material held in copyright—photographic and written—and to inform Gilbert's Royal Digest of such a guarantee in writing at the time of acceptance for publication. Submissions will be selected solely on merit, and we encourage both published and previously unpublished writers to contribute."

"Payment for articles accepted by Gilbert's Royal Digest is made in US dollars. The amount of payment for an article is set by the Publisher and Editor and is non-negotiable. Payment is made within 30 days of publication only."

Reprints allowed.

"We also welcome readers to submit historical and contemporary magazine and newspaper articles, clippings, photographs, and other sources of royal information for publication in Gilbert's Royal Digest. Payment will be offered only to the original author and in the event that the author is deceased, no payment will be made."

"There is a vast amount of information in print on the royal families in other languages that have never been translated into English. Gilbert's Royal Digest recognizes that much of this information would offer the English speaking reader and historian many new sources and we therefore encourage the translation of these materials by any of our readers who read and write other languages. Your efforts will be a service to history and offer us a better understanding of the royal families of Europe. Payment is offered for translation of historical articles. "

Yes, I know...

but then perhaps the editors think that overseas writers would be happier to be paid in US$ although the Can$ is far stronger at the moment!

But historical markets are so 'far and few' that I though this one might give Puma, Doogs and the non-fiction history buffs something to write for.

I'll add any fiction ones as I sort out the next batch of stories off to market.

Thank you for the posts, pdr. I'm really tickled you found the Indian Country one and posted it for the western writers. I did some google searching this morning and couldn't find anything about who was doing the anthology - just about ten notices in various places including Craig's list. Puma

FYI - The red flags are out on the Indian Country Anthology. There doesn't seem to be any information on who's sponsoring the contest, publisher, etc. - just lots of calls for submission on the internet. One AWer sent them an e-mail and asked about an over their limit work, and they told him they'd consider anything and they'd give details later. There is a thread in Bewares, so if you're thinking about this one, check that thread first. Puma

pdr, thanks a million for the Royal Digest! I think I've got an idea for them.

Funny, they say they accept International Reply Coupons. Just when I've finally stocked up on all sorts of foreign stamps... :)

Great thread, thanks!

A pleasure...

Freshie.

Anyone keen to build a C.V. of published historical fiction might care to think about women's magazines, especially the UK ones. Nothing too heavy, violent, or depressing, for these are entertainment reads, but the pay is excellent, the editors helpful. Anyone interested? Male writers with a sense of humour are welcome, donroc.

If so I can collect the addresses together for you and post them.

There are also a few zines that like flash - up to 500 words - and take historical fiction. Anyone interested in these?

I'm asking as it takes a little time to put the lists together, and update urls and e-mail addresses for each market. I'd rather spend that time writing, but if anyone wants 'em and is seriously trying to get a C.V. put together then I'm happy to help. Maybe a sticky with just the markets there would be useful for you all? Derek might be prepared to sticky for me?

pdr, that would be incredibly nice of you, thank you!

I've just been thinking the other day I'd really love to try all those British women's mags. They have a very good taste in short stories so it's quite a challenge. But I'm hopelessly out of date with them and finding one here on the continent is next to impossible.

pdr, you're a professional yourself but now you're helping us to become professional. Thank you!

Right...

give me until Friday to sort through and check urls.

I'll also start a new post with just markets and ask Derek to sticky it so that you can simply go and find fiction and nonfiction without our comments in between.
