I'm not even sure I should say it. I will begin with the preface that I am a one-man company, more or less, meaning I don't have to work if I don't want to. The office is in the house, attached but separate, so I do tend to work inhuman hours. But I don't have to, and I certainly don't follow a standard timetable. So with all that disclaimer out of the way, WHO MOVED MY UNDERWEAR? is 65,000 words, putting it between the original target of 70,000 and the revised target of 60,000. And, yes, it is finished. It just happened. My first book in four years. Whew...

And if you're behind target, I wrote almost 30,000 of those words in one week. So if I slacked off late and thought I was gonna die, and you got behind target early and have to pour it on now, it doesn't matter if we all finish. And you can do it. Yes you can. Write on.

Well, that is just awesome!

I'm not sure if I should say this ...

Yesterday I just couldn't get it done. I stared at the screen. I gnashed my teeth and howled in despair. Then I did the unthinkable.

I opened a new document and started typing. In my mind, I believed I was starting over. And considered never coming back here to admit it.

But this morning in the shower, it occurred to me that I simply jumped to another part of the story. That the first part needs heavy revision, but it is necessary to build the character & so that there isn't so much backstory to work into the book.

Where am I today? Still in the orange, but now up to 13,042. Still way behind, but not so terrible. And two more days of work time before I go back to being a mom all day & a writer for only an hour each morning & during the occasional naptime.

Hoooooo. I'm so glad I bought the ergonomic keyboard two months ago...

And a brief whine ... I'm sick! Terrible cold. Bleh. I feel icky. Looking at the bright side, all this coughing is helping me develop some muscle tone in my stomach while I just sit here typing, LOL.

ETA: If you haven't noticed, some of the people on this thread have some really awesome word counts ... keep going everyone!

Way to go, larocca! And love the title, by the way.

And good luck making use of those last few child-free dayswee. I am envious!

Well, last week was hard. I had hardly any motivation and was just irritated with my story. I'd heard from NaNo veterans that the third week is often the hardest. But I stuck with it and grudgingly kept to my wordcount. And now, my story is fun again! I went to an impromptu write-in at a local cafe with another NaNoer and pounded out 1800 words of a very entertaining scene. And the night is still young, so I'm hoping to bank some extra words for a rainy day (and what day doesn't have the potential for rain in Scotland?).

Way to go, everyone! We're getting closer!

Well, I am stopped again. This time it's a presentation on the comparison between English and French medieval legal procedure (about which I know nothing). I really wish my tutor would just let me read out my NaNo novel instead...

I'm only on 20 something thousand. Blech.

Hmmm... Nano is just about over. How did YOU do?

I got to around 20,000 words. I'm not sure, really, because I started writing different scenes in several different word documents, then began a new "main" document & I've been feeding them in, rewriting them a little as I insert them. Also have bracketed [insert scene A here] bits throughout. It is a mess, but I know where it is going. My word count is estimated because I have some scenes repeated as I've been inserting & rewriting, and I'm keeping the originals for reference.

In terms of Nano, I've failed spectacularly. However, during this time I had company for a week, got so sick that I spent several days wrapped up on the couch with a hot toddy, barely moving, and had a long weekend with my hubby home to entertain me (but get nothing done).

In terms of my own writing, around 20,000 words is the most I've ever done in a month. And here I am, up early, writing before the kids are up. Nano for me was a motivation to get into the regular habit of writing. But it's a big deal to me not to torture my family with my writing -- my number one job is still my hubby & kids. In another year I'll be home all day by myself & can really crank it out. The days when I had time to myself, I could get 3,000-5,000 words written depending on where I was in the story & how sure I was of what was coming next, whether I had to look anything up. In a few years, Lord Willing, I can be prolific. For now, I'm working on just writing regularly. LOL.

So in that sense, Nano was a success. I have a huge head-start-boost to my story & I'm motivated to finish. This is the longest I've worked on anything, too, and still had fresh ideas. By now I would typically be banging my head on the desk & deleting all my files, starting something different.

Also, I learned that I am still more or less a linear person, but I get bored with certain parts of it sometimes. If I'm bored, the reader will be, too, right? So I can jump around, write different scenes, skip the parts that I'm not sure of yet or don't feel like writing today, and still get something accomplished. It is stupid to be hung up on something like, "I must write this in order!" but nonetheless that has been huge for me, to just open a new word doc & write what appeals to me today.

This morning I'm very excited to look in my Buddies list on Nano and PastMidnight creeping up on 50,000! :Hail: Very nice! How did everyone end up?

Congratulations, larocca!

And how did you end up in Chiang Mai? I have been there before, in 1998, but only for a couple of days (went all over Thailand for nearly a month). If it hadn't been for the fact that my college back in the U.S. was already paid for & I felt too bad to not go finish, I would have just stayed in Thailand. I thought about it pretty hard!

I won!!

Naturally, I still have more story to go and, once I finish that, have the Herculean task of imposing some sort of order onto my story, as it grew and morphed as I wrote it until it no longer fits within the neat little outline that I initially arranged for it.

I still can't believe that I got to 50,000 words in just 29 days. I honestly never expected to get much beyond 30,000 words. That was my personal goal and I would've been thrilled if I had gotten that.

Although there were certainly a few days (mostly last week) where I was lacking in motivation, it was a great experience and was really a ton of fun. I think I picked a great story to NaNo, as it was fast-paced, entertaining, and light. I look forward to sharing scenes on Historical SYW!

Wee, during our 6 years in China, many colleagues recommended Chiang Mai. When we finally burned out on China, we snooped around Asia. One of Thailand's advantages was no quarantine for our cat. And of such silliness are great decisions made. We flew in last July to try it out for three months, and we're still here. It's in my new book. :)

Home - but for how long?
Congratulations!

You did it. You sat down every day and wrote. Well done indeed.

Now please don't stop, but do it every day, for that's what real writers do!

Well, I'm so thrilled and happy for everyone. Many congratulations to those who met their goals!

Me --I didn't "win" by reaching 50k. That's not why I Nano. I Nano to challenge and motivate and remind myself that if I stay focused I can achieve more than I ever thought. I only hit about 22k this year (lots of reasons --mostly work related --that broke my rhythm) but I'm inordinately pleased with what I did write. It's even better than expected and my story is forming nicely. That's the "win" for me from Nano.

:PartySmil

Cheers to all!!

I, for one, don't plan on stopping, pdr. I have a story to finish, after all!

Everyone got on so well at our regional NaNo write-ins that we're making it a long-term writing group, meeting once a week with our laptops and notebooks. Not for critiques, just to sit and write together. We'll see how it goes, but it's a great bunch and we had so much fun together during November.
