Sweets

hello. i write and i edit stories. not professionally of course, but i do have one client, my boyfriend's best buddy. he wrote a sci fi novel and (unfortunately) sent it into Publish America!!!! they accepted it (duh) and now i'm trying to help him figure out how to get the publishing rights back from them. he already signed the contract and recieved his copy of the book (which was not at all edited).
anyways, if anyone has any experience with publish america that may be useful, we'd both appreciate it. and if anybody wants me to read their stuff i'll do my best to offer good criticism. however, i donot understand poetry and i apologize for my ineptitude with it.
fiction is my forte.
thanks
sweets

Hello Sweets, and welcome to AW! About Publish America, I can only offer the advice: stay away from them. But once it's too late, there is no other option than to stick to the contract (7 years, right?). You can try and have your contract lifted - I know some people who have managed this. PA certainly doesn't do any editing, you have to do that yourself. They are only good in fooling authors and getting money from the books they themselves buy.

We have a Publish America sub-forum attached to the bewares and backgrounds forum. Lots of conversation there between the people that know how it works with them. And possibly some suggestions on what's worked in the past regarding regaining rights.
Best of luck.

Hi Sweets,

Not a very positive start, but hopefully now you're here on THIS forum things will look up for you very quickly. I'm sure you'll find loads of advice here and hopefully plenty to inspire you to get writing again in earnest.

I'm new, too - and have had my own probs with dodgy agencies, so I can feel for you although I was lucky enough to have an 'out' of my contract.

Best of luck,
Symphony
