This might be more appropriate for another forum, if so please move, but its more about whether other AW members think is this is a reasonable deal. From Cerriowen Press’s website: “Length of grant of publishing rights: full term of copyright.”

I guess that means that if they take your work, you kiss it goodbye and wipe away tears as the train pulls out of the station.

Cerriowen is the new mainstream division of Ellora’s Cave. Ellora seems to be top of the heap in E-publishing, and, with their high sales, etc, I can see how that contract term wouldn’t be a major issue in the dark recesses of her Cave. But how about mainstream Cerriowen? Does it sit well with you? I suppose that if they do, in fact, publish your book, you can reasonably expect better publicity and sales than you’d get from many other e-publishers. But other than those checks in the mail, you and your loved one would never see each other again.

I would definitely see if that's negotiable. It might be in their standard contract, but it's possible they're open to changes.

"Life of copyright" is pretty standard print publishing contract language. It's not so common in epublishers' contracts (which are more typically for a set time period)--but as I understand it, Ellora's Cave does quite a bit of print as well. Life of copyright is really only a problem if it's not accompanied by a reasonable, well-worded termination/rights reversion clause.

Type that clause in here, and we can comment.

Ah, Well, I was just looking at the website. I don’t have any connection to them. Probably, if one is lucky enough to get a contract offered, it’d then be time to worry about such things. Thanks for the info on standard print contracts, that’s something I didn’t know.

Cerridwen do get shelved so it might be reasonable for them to use print publishing norms. Also keep an eye on their exclusivity clause. They do negotiate contracts with authors so if you don't like it that isn't the end of the story.

For my contracts, the publisher does have life of copyright publication rights, but only if they keep the book in print, and sell so many copies each year. If they fail to do either of these things, publication rights revert back to me. This is how it should be.
