Ing Direct Story contest

That is the weirdest thing I've ever seen! A bank holding a picture book contest?! Looks legit though, and I love ING, I use them for many of my banking needs.

Be sure to check the guidelines/rules for this contest, and be sure you are okay with them before submitting. This is one of the contests that wants all rights, royalty-free, forever.

From ING's rules:
"Each Grand Prize winner grants ING DIRECT a perpetual, irrevocable, fully-paid, royalty-free, transferable, non-exclusive, world-wide right and license in and to his/her Story, with rights to sublicense, to use, copy, modify, reproduce, market, publish, distribute, sell and otherwise exploit for any purpose whatsoever, including without limitation, modifying the Story, copying the Story, improving the Story, making derivative works thereto, reproducing the Story and selling or otherwise distributing the Story."

A similar contest that had stipulations like this was the Woman's Day contest (I think it was last year?).

It's conditions like this that make me want to close my account with them ...

What else should we expect? The banking industry is built on capitalistic greed.

Define greed.

In this instance, it's asking a writer to waive ALL rights to his property, knowing that there are so many people eager to get published (many of whom may actually have a viable project that blows up big time) that they, i.e. ING, can possibly spin off into any number of ventures, collecting ALL the money and leaving the poor pitiful writer with nothing but his name on the book, assuming they don't get the rights to that either, such as Warner Bros. and the whole "Prince" fiasco years ago. Guy makes them millions, and they still aren't satisfied. They want to own his name too.

"Non-exclusive" means the writer can still submit/publish the story elsewhere, yes?

Otherwise, yeah, not great terms. (It might I guess be ignorance of the industry rather than greed. Pollyanna here.) I do like them as a bank, though.

Thing is, there isn't that much money in pb's for a writer anyway, for Ing to claw back what bit there is seems pathetically greedy to me. No, wait for it, the writer can always get 'exposure,' - why do the big organisations always use this as their reasoning?

I agree and that bugs the heck out me too especially since I have accounts with them. Greedy b*astards!

How much is not that much? More than the $1000 prize the winner gets? (Genuine question here; I don't know much about pb publishing at all.)
