Are cleft palates hereditary or is it just a random deformity?

Thanks

Apparently the majority of cases are not genetically based, according to the Hospital for Sick Childrens Cleft Lip and Palate specialists. I googled cleft palate and that one was the one I found easiest to understand. Google Toronto Hospital for Sick Children and get more detail.( sorry forgot to get you a link :[ )

There are specific genetic mutations associated with cleft palate. Also, exposure to alcohol and some medications in utero has been associated with cleft palate. There are also racial predilections--I think it's most common in Native Americans and Pacific Islanders, least common in African Americans.
