I can't think of a witty way of saying "I'm new"

Dawn0 has instructed me to introduce myself here. So. Um.

I'm trying (actually, at the moment I'm not trying at all -- I'm mucking about on the internet) to complete my first proper children's novel. I can't tell you what it's about, because I've only written a third of it, and the remaining two-thirds are still lurking in the future. I do have an ending in mind, but it'll probably be different by the time I get there.

Annoyingly, ideas for a second story are trying to take over my head. And yesterday a third story popped up, which I'm trying really hard to ignore. I assume that everyone has this problem...

I'll whisper the next bit, my guilty secret...

I started out by writing Harry Potter fanfiction, under the same username that I have here. It wasn't great, but it taught me a lot.

Anyway, this looks to be a good place for writers. Nice to see so many people here. :)

Welcome, Dink. You're doing better than I am, as you could at least get a post to open for you. I've tried for 2 days but when I hit "new post" or "reply", I can only get the header to accept type and then nothing else functions... and of course with nothing in the message box, it won't post. I don't know how I got your thread to open with a "quick reply" as I didn't do anything but click the topic line of your post and it happened to show up below. Who's complaining though, it might be the one and only post I get ;)

Pardon my complaining before even introducing myself. I'm Savannah and I've lurked here for a few years now. I usually don't have time to sit and talk, so never bothered to register. I've had off all this week and thought I'd delurk, only to find that task impossible. Sometimes you can't win, huh?

Anyway, I write memoirs and personal essays, am currently working on a couple of narrative nonfiction novels but have also had a few essays come out in print and participated in a serial story for the local newspaper. I'm pretty excited right now to announce I've got some writing included in Lisa Delman's new book "Dear Mom, What I've Always Wanted You to Know", release date 4-5-05. It's already available at Amazon. I can hardly wait to receive my copy and see how she put it all together.

Let's see, what else should I tell you in the event that I never get another post to open for me? ;) I write in my "spare" time, as writing is my second job. Though I love it, and want more time to do it, my first love is nursing and I don't want to give that up yet. I am active in the local writing community, though, participating in a weekly critique group and functioning as the Writer's Guild secretary. Keeps me accountable and moving with my goals. I think getting together with fellow writers, whether in person or online, is key to making a well rounded writer who can keep going. Without it, a writer's life can get very lonely.

Anyway, guess that's it. Wish me luck getting back in again ;) (of course now I will probably not have any more trouble, huh? LOL)

Well, for whatever reason, the threads I am opening to read give me an automatic "quick reply" message box to fill in, which hasn't been happening until this evening. I still can't start a thread or hit "reply" but at least now I have a voice ;D

A writer without a voice is a sad creature...

If you spend some time here
you won't need a shrink.

Hi Dink! I'm flattered that you not only took my advice but mentioned me too! I wish my kids would be as responsive! ;)

Welcome (again). I wonder if I'll be seeing that rock you live on when I visit Ireland (for the first time!) this summer?

Welcome, too, Savanna907.

Thanks for the welcome! :) What a lovely bunch of people you are.

Galoot -- I was indeed thrilled to discover that I have the honour of being the 1500th member of this forum. Gosh. I'll try not to let it go to my head, though. ;)

Savannah907 -- glad you were able to introduce yourself via this thread. I'll add my welcome to the rest, and I hope you're having better luck with getting the AW forum to work on your computer.

Dawno -- I'll always act on good advice, so thank you for pointing me in this direction. And you might see my rock, if you're visiting the east coast of Ireland -- I'll be perched on the grey misty lump that occasionally appears on the horizon.

Welcome!:hi:

(tip for the idea's popping up all over the place. Write them down, quickly. A little plot outline and any characters you might have, or whatever. Put them where you are likely to see them every so often. Then, keep on with what your doing. Tell yourself that if you want to write the next one, you have to finish the first one first. Then all your pent up energy will propell you forward when you finally get to start it.:))

Welcome again.

-Ally

(ps. It's alright. I started with Pokemon fanfiction. *shudder*)

Ally -- my knowledge of Pokemon begins and ends with the word 'pikachu'. Not sure how that would work as fanfiction. :D

The first piece of original fiction that I can remember writing was when I was 10 years old, and it turned out to be a complete rip-off of "Raiders of the Lost Ark". I didn't even notice until my teacher pointed it out...
