Could anybody/sombebody (ies) please direct me as to where/how I might be able to learn about writing fashion - by which, I mean.. clothing, accessories, etc worn by characters..

I'd like to doing a regency, but the fashion of the time period is proving a bit of a mind-block for me..

Any ideas?

(I'm sure this isn't the only obstacle I'll have, but anyways..) Any suggestions given will be greatly appreciated!

the only suggestion i can give is to read books like the one you intend to write. Most likely they have descriptions.
Also historical fashion books might have them.

I read quite a lot of the kind I want to write - and the descriptions there do help paint an image for me, but I guess what I'd really like is a resource that tells me most what I'd need to know about dressing in that period..

I've looked and looked for a suitable site but come across none so helpful as the one you listed, Craig - thanks! Maybe I'm not using the right search words..

Google regency fashion london

That should give you a good start and then you can narrow down what keywords work best from there depending on what you want.

You can also try looking at your local bookstore in the Reference or History sections. Charles Poole's "What Jane Austen Ate and Charles Dickens Knew" is invaluable for anyone who reads or writes Regencies, and there's a whole detailed section on clothing and fashon for both sexes. (There's lots of great books out there, that's just the first one that springs to mind because it's SO useful.)

I actually found that book today (on amazon, will go check it out at my local store or something..) and it seems an invaluable resource!

There's another one I found also that seemed great, but I got distracted at work.. can you imagine (?) I'll have to try and hunt it out again..

.. Aah! Elegant madness: High Society in Regency England & Everyday Life in the 1800s: A Guide for Writers, Students & Historians..

I'm looking forward to it!

I would suggest Ackermann's Costume Plates, women's fashions in England, 1818-1828. I am trying to write a regency era romance and this helped justify what I had read in other books and what my minds eye was creating. It has some color pictures as well as black and whites. I found it on Amazon, along with other resources mentioned. Good luck!

Ooh.. an afterthought! Does that book have info on men's fashion too?? What I've found so far is not what I had pictured in my mind's eye... but then I confess to not paying a lot of attention to the men's fashion in the books I've read... hehe

I have some of the books mentioned, and I also use English Women's Clothing in the Nineteenth Century, by C. Willett Cunnington. I got it off of Amazon, so I am sure you can find it.
Not just for fashion, but for a lot of different regency related information I use the following websites:
http://www.gaelenfoley.com/index-06history.html (LOTS of great links)
http://home.comcast.net/~dflawson/ (so much info it is almost confusing, lol)
http://www.ugoi.net/nonsense/name.html (general fun)
http://www.eclectics.com/allisonlane/common_regency_errors.html (always best to know what NOT to do)
http://www.regencylady.net/repository/ (lots-o-info)
http://heyerlist.org/slang.html (good language info)
http://72.14.253.104/search?q=cache...ing&hl=en&ct=clnk&cd=1&gl=us&client=firefox-a
(info on inheritance)
http://www.eskimo.com/~lhowell/bcp1662/misc/kindred.html (table of kindred)
http://homepages.ihug.co.nz/~awoodley/faq.html#common (great links)
http://www.chinet.com/~laura/html/titles01.html (great links)
http://janitesonthejames.blogspot.com/2006/08/cost-of-living-in-georgian-and-regency.html
(AWESOME money info)
http://www.likesbooks.com/regent.html
http://www.janeausten.co.uk/magazine/page.ihtml?pid=364&step=4 (more money info, and their general site has more great info)
http://www.chinet.com/~laura/html/titles12.html (correct forms of address)
http://lesleyannemcleod.homestead.com/regencychristmas.html (regency Christmas info, plays heavily into one of my stories)
http://homepages.ihug.co.nz/~awoodley/regency/marry.html (marriages)

Soo...almost all of those links are part of large lists of information, so click on all the links. Wikipedia is also a great starting resource as everything is sourced so you can find further info, and they have great pics too. Look up regency england, and then look at the fashion portions.
Hope this helps, and I would love to see what other resources and links other people have for regency fashion or general info.
:)

Wow, thank you! That's a great set of links there - I'm drowning in all the research at the moment - every time I learn, I realise there's yet MORE to learn.../googly eyed

Karan, can I ask what your reply has to do with the OP's (three year old) question about nineteenth-century clothing?

See, you've been wandering around the forums reviving all sorts of very old threads that have to do with fashion. Perhaps you could explain why?

Maybe you could introduce yourself, and tell us what you write, since this is a forum for writers.

I suggest you try to actually participate here in a different manner, as you are not impressing we moderators very much. Just FYI.
