***Disclaimer: Do not read if poor grammar and spelling makes you sad inside.***
Hi everybody,
I wanted to thank everyone who replied to my post a while back. I'm sorry I didn't give you guys an update of what happened until now. I've been super busy with papers and finals while trying to make a documentary for a family I know. For those of you who don't know. I had the privilege of visiting a local junior high school to speak with the students about my novel entitled The Eternal Link. The vice-principle was my old math teacher and I set it up through her. A full day's worth of teachers (8 classes) participated. They read the first two chapters of my novel before hand. So, when I got there I had a little speech prepared and asked questions. I was really nervous, but by the second class I had conquered my fear of public speaking. One of the teachers had me read chapter two aloud right there! Overall, I got some truly great critiques and one of the teachers thought to make a questionnaire for the kids and shared it with the other ones. So I had hundreds of scribbly fun to read! The honors students critiqued my grammar and spelling (horribly embarrassing considering I went over it a million times and had several others comb through it too). I laughed that off though. I know I suck at it. It's just life. Hooray for English teachers! Anyway as far as the actual students. Some were little punks (they were my favorite), some adored me, and some were neutral. That part was as I expected. What I didn't expect was that mixed with the critiques...they actually liked it. I'M SERIOUS! How cool was that. I signed over 50 autographs. Little girls followed me around and I spent lunch time with a group of girls that kept asking me a million starry-eyed questions. =) Also, I got a great response through e-mail the next day. The first one was from a girl who said she was too shy to talk in class but wanted me to know I was an inspiration to her, made her believe anything was possible, and who wanted to be just like me...I cried.
In conclusion, I got amazing comments that were both tough (as I asked) and helpful but I also had THE BEST FRIGGIN DAY OF MY LIFE
