Has anyone paid to have their proposal reviewed, edited, fixed etc. I know there are some places that do this and are very legit so this is not about avoiding scams or anything like that. I feel like what I have now is as good as I can get it. I also know hiring someone for help can be expensive. If anyone has used a service like this, was it helpful? Was it worth the money? And did it lead to any new contacts with agents or publisher? Thanks.

No, but plenty of people have other writers review their proposal. You could post it in Share Your Work at this forum and ask for constructive comments on 1) what's good; 2) what's missing; 3) what should be deleted.

Of course, it always nice to reciprocate and be willing to critique other people's work.

Also, if there are just sections you don't feel completely comfortable with, you could post them individually.

ETA: I'm assuming that you read the lengthy information at the top of this forum, on proposals. I think it includes everything anyone will ever need to know, and I've found it very helpful.

Thanks guys. I am new here and don't really feel up to having my work reviewed on a website. Plus it is quite long and past beginning stages. My proposal is complete and has been sent out, and I just trying to think about what I might do if everything does not go as planned. I know two places that do this and that other published authors have used. One of them (because of a common friend) has offered to take a look and initial thoughts to decide if I want to hire her. If anyone has used someone, I would love to hear about your experience. Thanks.

What about joining a local writers' group? I am in the same boat you are in and I will admit I am wary about posting my unpublished work on a public forum to be critiqued. Call it the New Yorker in me but I can't put my inner concerns to rest.

I am not looking for a writers group since this is for my proposal. I am not worried about the way it is written or sounds. However, I thought a professional who specializes in proposal assistance could offer something different than another writer. It was just something I was thinking about.

Favored - I agree with you. I think posting work maybe a good thing for beginners. I have tried to help out a few. Or fiction writers might want critique of their stories and form some sort of online writers group. But it is not something for me.

How about putting an ad on craigslist for any local editors in your area to review? Would you mind putting an update in here as I'm curious about getting my first proposal reviewed myself.

Thanks for the suggestion Favored, but I think I will stick to the people I have bee recommended if I go that way. I will let you know what it is like, but since I am not sure I think I might wait to here from the agent that wanted to see me full proposal first. Good luck with your project.

My advice would be to lean on other writers and test the waters with no-fee agents and publishers before paying anyone for anything. If they are good at getting books published, why would they need to charge to review proposals? Sounds a bit off. Good luck!

So, I just wanted to say that I am going to give this service a try. Based on a few conversations and a sample. I do think it could be a good. This service is quite different than just having other writers comment or having an editor look it over. It is really about getting a proposal in the best shape it can be in. The person I am going to use used to be an editor at a publishing house. If anyone wants to know more about how it goes, you can contact me.

I should have had an editor go through mine. My agent did a lot of editing that was good in retrospect but I didn't "see" the improvement it needed on my own. A lot of agents will not edit so I'm lucky but I really think she went the extra mile and I should have had an editor do it.
