WESTERN MARKETS Updated 4/2/2012 (at the bottom)

LITERARY AGENTS – listing western genre as one of their fiction interests as of October 6, 2011. (If you haven’t used agentquery, clicking on a name below will take you to that agents information on agentquery – not a lot. From there you need to look at that agent on their company’s website – sometimes what’s listed at agentquery does not agree with what’s on the website. Also, look for the agent in the AW Bewares and Background Checks thread and look them up on Preditors and Editors (http://pred-ed.com/) But, above all else, take your time and do your research. A too hasty query for a work that’s not ready loses that agent as a possibility for your work – and with so few agents looking at western, you don’t want that to happen.

INTERNET MARKETS

http://www.washingtonpastime.com/drupal/submissions (http://www.washingtonpastime.com/drupal/submissions)
Washington Pastime, online mag, they say they never get enough historical or western shorts (up to 3000 words). Their pay rate is questionable - token to professional payment based on their assessment. There is a thread in bewares and background checks on them - nothing bad, just mention of similarity in rejection letters and questions about the pay. ETA: saw in the bewares thread that someone was offered $2.50 for a story.

Frontier Tales Magazine for shorts and biographies western and "the interaction of the frontier with civilization". I didn't see anything on the website about payment.

Flash fiction contest, deadline May 15, 2012, limit 1000 words, $50 for first, $25 for 2nd-4th.

Short Stories
We take stories up to 5,000 words in length, five cents per word up to 2,500 words. Reprints are paid out at one cent per word.
Flash fiction
Up to 1,000 words. $25 per story.
FICTION - NOVEL LENGTH
Regarding fiction, we are interested in novels involving the following genres: suspense and mystery, urban fantasy, science fiction, western and romance. No erotica or mindless violence. In your submission, please include a cover letter, 500 word bio, synopsis (including the ending) and the first three chapters. Please do not send the complete manuscript unless we request you to do so.

Good fiction, of course, is character driven, so we ask that you keep that in mind. The modern reader demands a brisk pace with an emphasis on shorter chapters, as well. Dense prose is a thing of the past and we’d like to do our part to keep it that way.

Hey guys

How about agents who take the western/frontier genre seriously?
There are several out there. Mine is one, but she doesn't take new writers unless she meets you in person.

If you do a search at Agent Query (http://agentquery.com/default.aspx) for Westerns you'll get a few, less than 20. But still, more than 1.

This means that you want to be positive that any MS you're querying is absolutely, positively stellar, perfect, and the very best it can be. Because you don't have a lot of options out there and you don't want to lose your chance.

AW is loaded with ways to help you so determine. Share Your Work, for first chapter/first pages, other forums where you can find beta readers and potentially critique partners, etc.

Hi Write at - Sorry about that. I haven't gone looking for places to submit scripts (I'm sure there are some). If you happen across any, be sure to post them here. I think there's a least one other "westerner" who's writing scripts. Puma

Frontier Tales (http://frontiertales.com) is an online mag for Westerns. It is a non-paying market, however the editor, Duke Pennell, is hoping to put out a print anthology.

Sorry to say, but the link to Cowboy Magazine in the OP is now a GoDaddy link. :(

Frontier Tales - http://www.frontiertales.com/ It looks to be non-paying, but there is no word on the site to say if this is the case or not.

Obviously the original post in this thread is badly out of date. I plan to do some searching to see whether the options listed in the original post still exist three years later, and I would encourage everyone interested in trying to publish short fiction, novels, or poetry with a western bent to also look for possible markets.

It's one thing to want to revive interest in the western genre, but we also need to really work on doing it and the way to do it is to get more western stories into publication.

This morning I checked on the Western Writers Group who publish Roundup Magazine. Membership in that organization is limited (apparently) to already published writers. So guys, we need to get on our ponies and start working on this. Puma

Today, October 4, 2011, I updated the original post in this thread. There are some contests coming up we should think about, possibly even have one of our monthly SYW challenges be to write something for one of them.

Hope this updated information helps a few of you (maybe I'm not the only woman over 60 in the central states.) Puma

Updated 10/17/2011 with book publishers. This isn't to say there aren't some more out there.

There are a few more contests I need to check out and add, but other than that, this is about where I'm stopping for now. Hope the list is helpful. Puma

You're doing excellent work, Puma. The data is a goldmine and, although I'm not good enough to make use of it yet, the fact it is here and updated can only be a good thing for the genre and those writing or attempting to write in it. :)

What also tickled me, Harry, is that I found out there are other like-minded folks out there. So there is hope and we need to get our acts going. Puma

A thing to get our acts going. :)

Comets and Criminals (http://www.cometsandcriminals.com/) is a new prose and poetry market ...

Submissions are open now. We accept stories up to 5,000 words in the SF, Adventure, History and Western genres, and stories up to 10,000 words in the Crime and Mystery genre. If you've got a story that straddles more than one of those genres, send it in. We love genre stew. We pay $10 for fiction under 1,000 words, and 1c a word above that.

I didn't see Duotrope listed on here, so in case anyone doesn't know about it, it finds exactly what you're looking for: :)

Here's one I didn't see listed:

White Cat Magazine (http://www.whitecatpublications.com/?page_id=225) "Regarding fiction, we are interested in novels involving the following genres: suspense and mystery, urban fantasy, science fiction, western and romance." This quote is from the section about novels, obviously, but they also print short stories, and flash fiction.

We take stories up to 5,000 words in length, five cents per word up to 2,500 words. Reprints are paid out at one cent per word. Send these to submissions@whitecatpublications.com (submissions@whitecatpublications.com)

Flash fiction
Up to 1,000 words. $25 per story. Please submit these to submissions@whitecatpublications.com (submissions@whitecatpublications.com)

Thanks, Leslie. I'll add them to the first post. Puma

ETA: Added them at the bottom of the first post. They have a flash fiction contest going right now, deadline May 12 (or 15 - check first post), 1000 word max, $50 for first place. They are interested in flash, short stories, and novels and do mention western in what they're looking for.
