Confession time.

Edit: Third to last option should read, "Asked an acquaintance intrusive, personal questions about an event in his/her life."

I joined the "Northshield Metalsmiths" Yahoo group so I could pick their braines about how pot mending was done in medieval times.

I was up-front about it, and promised them a mention when the book gets printed (*nudges agent*). They were incredibly helpful and very nice to a complete stranger from Buffalo--they're all in the north of England.

The Net is so cool that way. :D

I don't even want to tell you what online group I joined. Let's just say it was an embarrassing personal condition. ;) (I was also up-front, since I had specific questions.)

you martyr and shine.
I walked outside barefoot during an icestorm because one of my characters does that. I needed to see how it felt. It hurt like hell.

I've loitered in a laundromat, a rural northern Michigan circuit court building, a bar parking lot in the same area, and explored every nook and cranny of a certain Victorian lighthouse.

I became even more of an expert than I already was on steam heat, just to be certain the few paragraphs that deal with it are correct.

But that's only three of the things on your list.

Is it incriminating if I say that I haven't done some of those things...but I'm willing to?

I'm a big fan of using teh interwebz somewhat illicitly.

Thanks to one of my characters, I honestly know everything there is to know about Type 1 diabetes and still, two years after writing the manuscript, keep up with several diabetes blogs. (I actually went to a teens-with-diabetes message board, introduced myself and told them exactly what I was doing, and had tons of people emailing me, asking if I'd like to interview them. I did, of course.)

My MC's brother had an eating disorder, and I joined a message board support group for relatives of people with ED, under my character's name.

Deaf message boards for my Deaf character.

etc.

Haha, I now know more about Honduras' educational system than I ever wanted to...for that one paragraph.

So, Jo, are all these things you've done?

Behind you! Boo.
I eavesdrop to create character sketches ALL the time. I'm good at looking like I'm not listening. See that woman on her BlackBerry? She looks like she's working, doesn't she? Nope, she's writing down notes about you.

So, Jo, are all these things you've done?

Ahem. Let's see.

1. Performed a risky physical maneuver or intentionally injured myself just to "see how it feels."

- Actually I have not done this! I have accidentally injured myself and THEN put it in a novel, and occasionally I write about an injury and COINCIDENTALLY injure myself the same way... or maybe it's not a coincidence??? ;)

2. Loitered in a place where I am not allowed/do not belong to observe "how they do things."

- Emergency room and courtroom. Oh yeah, one time I ended up in the sleeper section of the train. I was trying to get to the engine but they found me and kicked me out.

3. Eavesdropped on a private conversation to collect dialogue material.

- All the time. Why do people have private conversations at Starbucks? Just because I'm a stranger doesn't mean I'm not listening. :)

4. Stalked a complete stranger to observe their physical mannerisms or habits.
- Most recent occurrence... I have a character who uses a wheelchair sometimes, and there's a guy in my apartment complex with one. So... yeah. Now I know how he gets in and out of his car. (Almost ran over him one day, actually... oops.)

5. Encountered something which permanently scarred me while in search of (mostly) legitimate info.

- Yes. Trust me, you don't want to know what it is.

6. Become an expert in an obscure field so two paragraphs in my novel will be technically correct.

- Ask me anything you want about prefrontal lobotomies. I also do bladder issues, spinal cord injuries, and several major geographic regions.

7. Joined an online group for a demographic I don't belong to, to gain insight about said group.

- Yes. I said I was an author though.

8. Professed interest in forming a relationship with someone so I could milk them for information.

- There was this guy in college who had a motorcycle, and I wanted to know about them. I didn't realize he was taking it as a come-on until he asked me out. Oops.

9. Asked an aquaintance intrusive, personal questions about and even his/her life.

- Most recently, the wife of my hubby's best friend was having issues getting pregnant. I now know quite a lot about fertility treatments. Granted, I haven't written about that subject yet, but I'm sure it will come up someday. :)

That's pretty awesome. Although, granted, to any stranger, you're just the creepy-stalker neighbor...

Ahem. Let's see.

There was an article like a month or so ago about some woman in Saudi Arabia that got arrested for sitting with men at a Starbucks.

Of course, my first thought was - "There's a Starbucks in Saudi Arabia?"

 What can I say, I notice and focus on weird things in life.

For random research purposes, nothing beats being a part of an online gaming community. I now know several people in all branches of the military, a couple of lawyers, bunches of IT people, a few "colorful" individuals from various sub cultures, real estate agents, people from entirely different countries... you name it, it's probably in our guild.

And they're all horny. Go figure. I know much more than I ever wanted to know about anatomy and what some people consider pleasurable or attractive :Ssh: Though, on the plus side, my vocabulary has grown by leaps and bounds.

Eavesdropped? All the time.

Risky physical manuver? Well, there was this advanced meditation posture that a character was supposed to contort himself into which was impossible for me, but a more rubbery friend did manage to do it. And there are other physical manuvers which, ahem, will have to go unmentioned in a family forum. ;)

Research for two paragraphs? Sometimes for a couple words -- gotta love the Internet.

I put myself in "Other" because I learned a smattering of Polish so I could navigate websites and find info and photos. Ya gotta do what ya gotta do. A few other categories hang loosely upon me.

Amen to this! I know way more about things I probably shouldn't, thanks to WoW.
