If an agent asks you not to sign with anyone until they finish your manuscript, i take it that's a good sign? and should you worry if the agent does not get back to you right away (say within 5 days)

It means they're at least interested enough to want to make sure they get a chance to make an offer. And no, I wouldn't worry about not hearing back so soon. :) It could just mean they're right in the middle of a big deal for one of their existing clients.

And good luck!

Toni, that's great news! I would suggest though, that you politely ask the agent how long they'd like the exclusive to last. It certainly will not do any harm, and it will give you some kind of time scale so you won't be biting your nails so much. Any agent worth thier salt will know that you don't want to hang about forever, and they will get back to you with a rough idea of how long they will take to read the MS. Best of luck!!!!

OK, said agent got back to me. Sent ms back with editorial notes. Most of them were subsitituting periods for commas, there there three places where she suggested improvements. then she said that she'd like me to review the changes and she'd talk to me next week after she gets back from a writer's conference. No firm offer of representation. I also had another agent interested in November, she suggested changes, i made them, then she went on leave and i have heard nothing from her since January. Once again, no firm offer of representation.

Thoughts?

THis is common. I know of several of my author friends who were eventually signed this way. Agents sometimes want to work with you to see how you do edits/revisions...Take this as a VERY good sign that your work is in the ball park.
PM me with names if you want and I can be more specific.
