How often do you write on your WIP?

Just curious on a Sunday afternoon: Do you BIC every day when writing on a WIP, or are you more of a weekend writer? Or something else all together?

I write when I feel like it.

I realize those are dirty words around here, but no...I don't write when I don't want to.

Sometimes that means more than one hardcore session a day, sometimes that means drizzling throughout the day, sometimes that means nothing for a week.

I write when my kids are in school. They've been on vacation for the last two weeks, so I've been very unproductive. Hooray for Monday!

I like to write at night. On the weekends I especially like to wake up early and write when I feel like the city is still 'somewhat' asleep

. Like this morning, I woke up, made some tea, lit a candle, and knocked out a few pages. I think it's important to write even when we aren't really in the mood, at the very least for the practice and because you never know when you'll discover some good prose within you.

I try to set aside at least 2 hours a day to write. Sometimes I write a lot, and sometimes not a single usable word. Personally, I just can't "force" it, but at least I try to set aside the time -- it is work.

At the moment, four hours in the morning, four hours in the evening, five days a week.

So not every day. But on my off days I tend to find myself daydreaming about a scene or whathave you, and come back to it on Monday with a raft of bits of paper with scribbled notes on.

I'm editing now, so I'm avoiding it. Um, ignore that...

When I'm actively working on a first draft, I strive for 1000 words a day, 5 days a week. That usually translates into an hour and a 1/2 for me, M-F.

I'm revising right now. To answer the question, pretty much every minute I can, every day. Which doesn't amount to all that much time since I have other obligations (house stuff on weekends, spending time with my wife, etc.). I work on it after work every day for at least an hour, sometimes for a little while after dinner. Lately I've been printing out the latest chapter to continue revising during breaks at work.

I had intended to have the second draft finished by April, but that's not gonna happen. Sigh.

Having not been blessed with the gift of ambition, I set myself on a simple to achieve schedule. For a novel, I write two chapters a week. If I can write half a chapter in a day (about 1500 words), that gives me three days off every week for brainstorming/procrastinating while still achieving my goal. For shorter pieces, I try not to write anything longer than I can do in one well-disciplined day.

I have a deadline and a word count I have to hit for my first draft, and the math works out to 1000 words per day. I write it between dinner and sleep (or whenever, on weekends). For me that takes between 2 and 4 hours, depending on whether I've planned out the scene for that day or whether I'm just flailing for what to work on next.

The deadline actually gives me a little leeway -- I can skip 10 days between now and the deadline and still meet the draft requirements. So I have 10 "coupons" I can give myself whenever I want to take the day off.

If I write 2000 words in a day, I can "buy" myself another day-off coupon.

Writing is hard work...

When I'm working on a story I write every day. That means Christmas, birthdays, and days where I work sixteen hours before coming home.

I do it even when I would rather do ANYTHING else, because if I don't . . .

Well I don't know what happens if I don't, but I won't take the chance of finding out. It's a routine, I guess.

Average 1-3k a day. My most was 5k.

Well, when I'm not on hiatus, I try to set weekly rather than daily goals just because my schedule between work and the kids can get so chaotic. One day I may struggle to get 300 words on the page, then I could easily write 2,500 the next. This week I have a goal of 7,000 words (yes, it even changes week to week) which is more than my normal goal of 4-5k per week.

I like to write first thing in the morning, before the kiddos are awake. It's just easier for me. But I'll write any time I have the chance and feel motivated.

To the several people who repped me saying 'ooh that's a lot' I'd like to say

1) Thanks.
2) I have CFS ( like ME) so I can't work as such, because I need to sleep for two - four hours during the day, and have you seen the state of daytime TV? I'd rather stick pins in my eyes than watch one more episode of Car Booty.
3) I do my hubby's accounts, and quotes ( 1/2 hour a day) and I answer the company phone for him. It's an internet phone, which means I have to sit at the computer.....

Unfortunately yes ( car boot sale = garage sale, kinda). And Cash in the Attic. And loads of shows about doing up your house / escaping the rat race and buying a wreck in the country to do up. If I see that woman one more time I WILL GO MAD!!!!!!!

I'm writing nothing right now. Not even revising. I'm adjusting to a new schedule and can't do anything but work, look after my family and sleep.

In my former, blissfully unemployed, existence, I wrote when my kids were in school, and I wrote almost every day. I hope to get back at it in the next few weeks, when things have settled down for me.

Every morning for an hour or so before work, during my lunch break if I have time to take one, and then after work for at least another hour. On the weekends, not at all if I've got a lot of social stuff happening, somewhere between 3-7 hours/day if not.

This feels incredible when I can crank out 4000 good words in a day, and not a little pathetic when I can't get out a single sentence I'd be willing to admit I wrote.

I do often wonder why my husband puts up with me.
