I had a farrier shoe my horse with an undersized shoe and drive the nails into her white line (this may have had something to do with the fact that he knew it was the last time he was doing her as she was moving downstate). A few weeks later, just before she was due for a reset, she went lame. I called the farrier first, before the vet, and he found the white line. Expensive (but simple) shoes and some treatments fixed it, but I was sure as hell pissed.

Google for more. There are plenty of ranges of treatment options, which depends in part on the severity of the white line and in part on the vet/farrier/horse person advising you... (like many things in the horse world)

If the shoer quicked your mare, B, she should have been lame immediately, not weeks later. At any rate (as you probably know--just sayin') Rav's question on wht ln dz is quite a different deal from a close nail. White line is generally a fungal invasion chowing down on the hoof under the horn. Tres icky.
