(You can find this on your Duotrope Control Panel page, if you haven't seen it.)

Me, I'm hitting 14.29%, which is apparently higher than average. It's a pretty small sample -- I'm 2-for-14.

(My pending submissions are at somewhat more selective places, though, so I expect my average to decline. I dread that fateful day when the message "Your acceptance ratio is higher than the average. Congratulations!" no longer appears.)

Huh? I don't have that stat on my control panel page.

Maybe you only get that if your acceptance rate is above the average (which I doubt mine is).

Or maybe it is because I signed up for duotrope when they were brand spanking new and they haven't updated us old-timers with new features. who knows?

oh well.

I submit rejection stats anonymously, but as I have 100% rejections, I imagine it'd be something like "Your acceptance ratio is pitiful. Commiserations!"

Only it won't be, because too many people would be offended if they had messages like that. :)

Mine is 14.29%. Of course duotrope says this is above average, but...

I was above average...something like 12-point-whatever, but then I had a, um, bad run, and the stat disappeared. Pooh. Gonna get it back this year! Helz yeah, I'm reporting nothing but acceptances! No, wait, that isn't the point of the site, is it? :D

What can I say. I submit a lot and Duotrope depresses me.

My stats:
Pending responses: 7 hurry up already!
Submissions sent last 12 months: 27 started subbing in November
Submissions sent this month: 8 Am I getting desperate?
Acceptance ratio: 22.22 % (Your acceptance ratio is higher than the average. Congratulations!)

Now I'm all paranoid about it disappearing.

Now I'm all paranoid about it disappearing.

Imagine how I feel. I didn't even know this stat existed until today. And then to find out that I'm not even average in the Duotrope universe. Oh the horror!

Sigh.

Oh well. I am also realizing that I send out an order of magnitude more submissions than the rest of you. (Or at least the ones who are self-reporting to this thread.)

Hey Spiral Stairs and Soccer Mom. You're both at 14.29. That's cool.

Gray Rose, eight submissions in a month is not desperate. I've sent eight in a day (though I tend to submit in spurts).

I have to admit to being a duotrope addict. I check the recent reports daily and try and parse out which mags are reading slush at the moment. I love to sort my submissions list and calculate average number of days for rejections, acceptances, specific markets, etc. Ah, the things I do to avoid revising my novel.

C'mon, where are your stats?

Good for you for having that many to submit.:D

Me too, and I feel it doesn't help me in the slightest.

I've got eight submissions for the month, but I'm pretty much cashed out until I get some rejections to re-submit. Here are my detailed stats:

Pending responses: 9
Submissions sent last 12 months: 24
Submissions sent this month: 8
Acceptance ratio: 14.29 % (Your acceptance ratio is higher than the average. Congratulations!)

I started using Duotrope (which, for the most part, was the beginning of subbing for me) in November.

C'mon, where are your stats?

This is what Duotrope gives me:

Pending responses: 16
Submissions sent last 12 months: 64
Submissions sent this month: 11

But that's not really the whole story.

I started submitting shorts again in Jan. '06 (and found Duotrope at around the same time).

During that time period (Jan '06 to present), I have had six stories published. I just got my contributor's copies of the latest (American Literary Review). It's nice to have something to put on the bookshelf.

In the same period, I have had 199 rejections. I'm considering my options for celebrating rejection number 200. Maybe I'll post something in R&D. I suspect I'll get it in the next few weeks.

I've had 19 stories in and out of circulation with at least one submission each. Yes, I simsub.

If the duotrope acceptance rate is for lifetime stats, I suppose that puts me somewhere around 3%.

Other interesting tidbits.

Nearly half of the rejections were for stories that were later published at slightly less prestigious but largely comparable magazines.

The most rejections I've gotten for a single story (still unpublished) is 36.

I've sent stories to about 100 markets.

The most rejections I've gotten from a single market is 11. Darn you, Glimmer Train. (They just make it so easy to submit -- it's like crack.) For the record, I haven't sent more than five stories to any other market, and those mags all have editors that have sent me encouraging notes. (Glimmer Train is not encouraging me -- they think I'm stalking them.)

Yikes. That's alot more information than you probably wanted. Let that be a lesson to you, Gray Rose. Never get me started on statistics.

Not any more! McSweeney's Internet Tendency dealt me a crushing blow today, dropping my average to .133 (now using the baseball method of expressing averages, which is more fun).

That's still above average, apparently, but I know I'm on the precipice.

I think any acceptance gives you an above average ratio. Um, wait, it disappears if you dip under the invisible line? *panics*

Pending responses: 19
Submissions sent last 12 months: 78
Submissions sent this month: 6
Acceptance ratio: 16.90 % (Your acceptance ratio is higher than the average. Congratulations!)

OK, so this thread got me curious. So I wrote to the powers that be at Duotrope to ask about the stat. Here's what I learned.

To get the Congrats line on your profile, you need to be above the acceptance average found at the bottom of this page: http://www.duotrope.com/rtstats.aspx

Right now it is about 7%, so y'all are looking pretty good to keep it for awhile.

For you folks who have that acceptance percentage displayed, I have a question. Is that your acceptance percentage for the last 12 months? Or for all your submissions recorded in Duotrope? I'm wondering because the percentage they use as the baseline is only from the last 12 months.

Oh, and I confirmed that they don't mention it if you are below the average because they "don't want to discourage users who are new to submitting." Luckily, I cannot be discouraged.

You made me look. I'm way down in submissions since I started writing books and I'm now subbing to agents. I'm happy to NOT post that average. But for shorts, I'm doing pretty well:

Pending responses: 2
Submissions sent last 12 months: 23
Submissions sent this month: 2
Acceptance ratio: 22.10 % (Your overall acceptance ratio is higher than the average for all users over the past 12 months. Congratulations!)

Is Duotrope sitll updating their market listings? Recently I've noticed that they link to more markets that don't have published guidelines ... in the past, these would be moved over to their DNQ list.

Within the past few days, Duotrope added a market that I had suggested (Hitotoki). So they are updating their listings in that way.

(They haven't added The Big Jewel, another market I suggested, and I can't tell why.)

Good to know. I reported several markets that took off their guidelines from the site, and they haven't touched them. I don't know if it's because these markets are bigger names and they don't want to remove them or what, but a new market with no guidelines info would not get awarded an entry, so why should these?

Behind you! Boo.
Mine is 11.34%, but I have a couple out at very competitive magazines, so I'm expecting that to drop soon.
