C'mon, where are your stats?
This is what Duotrope gives me:
Pending responses: 16
Submissions sent last 12 months: 64
Submissions sent this month: 11
But that's not really the whole story.
I started submitting shorts again in Jan. '06 (and found Duotrope at around the same time).
During that time period (Jan '06 to present), I have had six stories published. I just got my contributor's copies of the latest (American Literary Review). It's nice to have something to put on the bookshelf.
In the same period, I have had 199 rejections. I'm considering my options for celebrating rejection number 200. Maybe I'll post something in R&D. I suspect I'll get it in the next few weeks.
I've had 19 stories in and out of circulation with at least one submission each. Yes, I simsub.
If the duotrope acceptance rate is for lifetime stats, I suppose that puts me somewhere around 3%.
Other interesting tidbits.
Nearly half of the rejections were for stories that were later published at slightly less prestigious but largely comparable magazines.
The most rejections I've gotten for a single story (still unpublished) is 36.
I've sent stories to about 100 markets.
The most rejections I've gotten from a single market is 11. Darn you, Glimmer Train. (They just make it so easy to submit -- it's like crack.) For the record, I haven't sent more than five stories to any other market, and those mags all have editors that have sent me encouraging notes. (Glimmer Train is not encouraging me -- they think I'm stalking them.)
Yikes. That's alot more information than you probably wanted. Let that be a lesson to you, Gray Rose. Never get me started on statistics.
