I'm at a crossroads.
My publisher is focusing on romance now, so my mystery series either needs to be revamped or ditched.
My question is--what's more popular, paranormal romance or historical?

It's like these characters are all hanging around playing cards, having a few drinks, and waiting for me to make up my mind.

Thanks!

How about Historical Paranormal Romance? Quite popular as far as I can see on the bookshelves.

Good question. Not sure it's being tracked separately or just lumped into Historical. I'd suspect the latter, for the moment. Will post later if I find anything snooping the web.

I'm hearing more editors asking for historical, but historical paranormal seems to be hot too. I think either way---but it's hard to write for the market, because editors are now buying for publication in 2010.

Paranormal romance is still selling, but most of the editors I know (including myself) are getting burnt out on the subgenre. It's hard to find something fresh--we've vamped every vamp, wolfed every wolf--so don't squash your characters into the paranormal box just to catch a wave. So take heart if you'd rather not jump on the paranormal bandwagon.

Thanks. I think I'm seeing things a bit more clearly. But it seems I've been hearing that Vamps are outplayed for a while now. Yet, as is their nature, they refuse to die. Especially with the popularity of the TV show Moonlight, which I'm a fan, I wonder if the new blood will revive the undead.:e2teeth:

Have you checked with your editor. Seems to me that a series with one part already published might just need light 'romantic elements', all things considered.
