So I've been re-reading 'The First Five Pages' and something struck me.

There are other odds and ends that can cause a preliminary dismissal. Perhaps the biggest one is the question mark. Ninety-nine percent of the time it is misused, especially when used early and often.

Now, in what way might I be misusing a question mark? It signals a question, doesn't it? He doesn't actually say.

I am, once again, confuddled.

I don't believe he's actually saying that it is used incorrectly, in terms of it's purpose. Substitute 'abused' for 'misused', perhaps...

An example of 'the wrong way' might help; Imagine the following as the opening for a story or novel:

* * * *

Where was he? What was happening? How did he get here?

Jason was confused - and, would it be fair to say, perhaps also a bit frightened?

"How did I let this happen?" he wondered aloud. "What was in that drink? ...and who was that woman who gave it to me? Why would she do this to me? Why?"

* * * *

I think that would give you the general idea of what NOT to do....

(*Grin*)

So no internal dialogue questions, at least early in the MS? I mean your MC has to question things sometimes, or they are supremely confident in their abilities - and consequently ( to me) boring.

Or just don't over do it?

"How did I let this happen?" he wondered aloud. "What was in that drink? ...and who was that woman who gave it to me? Why would she do this to me? Why?"

maybe:

That drink tasted funny, and I'm sure I've never seen that woman before. A mickey finn would explain a lot about this penguin, and the suspenders...

For comparison...

The bed was wide and comfortable; the furniture, inexpensive but tasteful; the room itself, clean and airy.

Nevertheless, Jason jerked upright in the bed, galvanized as a simple realization pierced the final veil of sleep:

He had no idea where he was.

Perhaps the allure of the mysterious woman had enticed him to drink too much - or perhaps something more sinister was at work here, and there had been more than simply wine in that glass she'd offered him.

Jason didn't know...
