I'm writing a mystery story in which I want to make reference to a Agatha Christie story (I think it's a novel but I'm not sure). I can't remember the novel or even whether it was Poirot, Marple etc. All I know is that the characters all think they hear a gunshot in the library (or something), but it turns out the victim was killed much earlier and that the perp simulated the sound of the shot somehow (again, I don't remember details). I've been searching fan sites etc, but haven't found anything. Does any die-hard fan out there know which book this is?

I think this is Murder at the Vicarage, although I don't have a copy of it to hand to check.

The Miss Marple mysteries are being shown daily here at the moment - if it's on I'll try to confirm it for you. :)

It's Murder at the Vicarage, as ElaraSophia says. The actual gunshot was fired with a silencer, and a maid thought she heard a loud sneeze or cough; the gunshot sound was simulated with a rock falling from a piece of wood that was weakened by acid (yeah, I know).

The detective is Miss Marple.

Thanks for the info

I do remember reading Murder at the Vicarage. I read so many Agatha Christie mysteries that I get them all mixed up. I'll see if I can find it at the library and verify that it's the one I'm thinking of. Thanks a lot!
