Go to your library and browse some newspapers and magazines on microfilm from the years you're interested in. You'll find everything from fashion spreads to advice for homemakers to advertisements for garters. If you don't live in the city or area you're writing about, see if your library can get you newspapers from the place your ms. is set. That way, you can add specific local color by knowing, for instance, which shop your character stopped in to pick up his hat.
