Never mind about the music. Some bands have the best names.

Pop Will Eat Itself
Death Cab for Cutie
Carter The Unstoppable Sex Machine
Vampire Weekend

This one gets honorable mention, because it had to be changed for legal reasons:

REO Speeddealer

Any others?

Porno for Pyros

Always made me think, what would porno look like for pyros? Scantilly-clad girls pouring jerry-cans of lighter fluid all over themselves? Greased-up head-to toe in that vaseline stuff that stuntmen use?

Cop Shoot Cop
Gaye Bikers on Acid
The Grateful Dead
Thinking Fellers Union Local 281 (but boy, does the album stink on ice)
Mr. Cranky
James White and the Blacks
Virgin Prunes
Dalis Car (without the apostrophe)
The Who (come on, don't you wish you'd thought of it first?)
The Dead Milkmen
Crippled Pilgrims
The Washington Squares
Killing Joke
Squirrel Nut Zippers

and, maybe my all-time favorite, though I've never heard them:

Twelve-Tone Failure

P.S. Look up Jello Biafra's No More Cocoons spoken-word album. The "Names for Bands" track is classic.

And this man knows band names. I mean, anyone who fronted both the Dead Kennedys and Lard has a way, y'know?

Jello Biafra is a good name, too. Cool names for people in bands count, too.

Speaking of which, I mentioned Carter The Unstoppable Sex Machine...I like the fact that the guys in that band named themselves Jim Bob and Fruitbat. Kind of the anti-cool nickname. Although the band name itself cancels it out, as Fruitbat's real name is Leslie Carter, and he apparently believed himself to be an unstoppable sex machine.

When I were a youngster I were in a band. *Pffft Pfffffffffft*

We called ourselfs "Hammermill Bond" which we took from a pack of copy paper.

We got a letter of permission from the company to use the name.

Best band name ever had to be "The Beatles."

Then there's "Toad the Wet Sprocket" :Wha:

Buddy of mine back when cassette tape use was at its peak suggested "Headcleaner" as a band name. I thought that was pretty cool.

I think a great name for a punk band would be: "The Shits"

How about "Scum of the Earth"?

I had to beat the crap out of them to get them to play once.

I always thought a great name for a punk band would be:

P-Nile D-Nile

All this time I've saved that name and never joined a punk band.

My saved-name for a blues rock trio: "Big Willie and the Twins"

Dunno why, but the missus laughs every time I tell her that since I'd be the lead guitarist, I'd be Big Willie.

Toad the Wet Sprocket comes from a Monty Python skit about a band that changes their name hundreds of times. Toad the Wet Sprocket is one of the names.

My personal fave was a campus band when I was in college, Fat like Dad.

Ween
Peen
Kings of Belmont
Hollywood Love Dynasty (okay, this was never a real band. . . we end up calling ourselves Bagambo, which I think sucked)
Six Day Bender
Guns and Roses
The Stabones
Assasinate Bono (still, not really a band. It was for a show or two then they changed their names to Tricky Cats and the Will Boners. . . I think they are serving burgers now)
The Hackensaw Boys
The Soggy Bottom Boys
The E-Street Band

Check out Ween, Peen, the Kings of Belmont (or even Barling and Collins, which is not a great band name but a great band) on myspace if you have a chance.
