Today I have four cats and a new grave.
Four years ago I brought him home from Animal Control. He was nearly five years old, the oldest cat there. I figured, though, that he would likely have ten good years. I was wrong. Last night the vet diagnosed him with inoperable cancer and advised putting him to sleep. I agreed and twenty minutes later I was down to four cats.

I'm so sorry to hear that, Komnena. It doesn't take long for them to wiggle their way into our hearts, and it's so hard when they leave us. Will give my 3 extra hugs and scritches today.

Aw, Komnena. I'm so sorry. We did this two years ago with one of our cats too. It's hellish, isn't it?

{Hugs} I know how hard that is (I have cats of my own), especially when it comes out of the blue like that. I'm glad you had him for four years, but that's the hardest thing about adopting a pet...knowing you will have to say goodbye someday and never knowing exactly when that will be. It's worth it for the love they give us, even though the end hurts so badly.

I'm so sorry. I know what it's like to lose a pet. I lost two dogs in one year, both (this is my own supposition and I have no evidence to truly back it up) due to an inept vet. I deduced the inept part based on my experience and the experiences of others with whom I sort of accidentally shared my story. If I'd known about the things they told me before hand, I might still have the two dogs. Non-pet people don't understand that losing an animal can sometimes be as devastating as losing a person.

A big hug from me. I'm so sorry for your loss. I lost two dogs three weeks apart last summer and it nearly destroyed me.

And lots of sympathy. I lost my buddy Bear (dog) five years ago and I still think about him every day. We lost our cat last summer (she was 18) and I acutely felt her absence this winter when she wasn't there to snuggle under the covers between my feet when I went to sleep.

Take comfort in knowing you did the best, most loving thing you can for your cat. You put his best interest above your desire to keep him here and there's no more selfless thing you can do.

More hugs - just cause... :Hug2:

I'm so sorry for your loss.
I had to put down two of my darlings recently and I grieve for them every day.
Try to remember the good life you shared together, however short it may seem.

I'm sorry about your cat. A lot of us have been through something similar and know how it feels.

My sympathies for your loss. We know it hurts. Concentrate on the good four years you gave each other, and give the other four an extra petting. They'll be missing their friend also. :Hug2:

Thanks everybody. Your support means a great deal to me.
Red had the sweetest personality of all the animals I've shared my life with. He was the only male cat never to try for being alpha cat. He was a red tabby with a white bib and four white paws. He had been at Animal Control for six months when I met him. It was a choice between him and a gorgeous, equally sweet eight-month-old female. I thought she was a bit young and I really wanted a settled, mature animal. I thought also she would have a better chance of being adopted than the older Red. I still wonder sometimes if she did in fact find a home.
The male survivors are reacting with kittenish behaviors. I think they know Red is gone and now feel nervous, uncertain.

Last night I was feeding them and found myself looking like mad for the fifth bowl, only to remember that the fifth bowl was no longer needed.

Every time I lose a pet, months go by before I stop expecting to see them. Hang in there, and give the other four some extra loving.
