Actually I believe the original is "wiz kid," since wiz is short for "wizard." (IE someone who's so good it's like magic.)
But if you go to dictionary.com you can see that this is now also being spelled "whiz," which has the alternate meaning of flying quickly through the air (and making a "whiz" noise).
I believe whizz ONLY has the "flying through air" definition.
I think you would be fine with whiz or wiz, but personally I would use wiz because... well, to me, whiz is peeing.

Reminds me back in Civ III when the word "Deity" would swap to "Diety" depending on where in the game you were reading the text. You would THINK that at least someone on the whole development/beta-test team would point these things out.

It's WHIZ. Whiz Kids are variously Ford Motor Company execs, sports superstars, computer nerds, and others. I could swear there was a radio quiz show called The Whiz Kids, with teenage contestants, but I may have the title wrong. I think Nixon was one. In fact, my father imitated a moose for one of the programs (Teddy Roosevelt's party), for which we received a Zenith Transoceanic Radio. wish I still had it.

Argggg. I was hoping I didn't have to make the matter even MORE complex by adding in the hyphen variants.
