Okay, so my 5-yr-old granddaughter brought home a kitten. The poor cat was skinny and riddled with ear mites, a condition I treated at home. A female, she didn't seem very old, but now she's rolling around in the floor and crying out for companionship, if you know what I mean? I've never had a kitten that went unspayed long enough to go into season, so my question is, "How long does this last? How long must I endure her sexual purring, meowing, and pleading?"

If memory serves correctly, it's about a week (I adopteda stray once and got in the same situation...I was counting the hours till she stopped so I could haul her to the vet!). Good for you to take the kitty in : )

It was either take the kitty in or watch those big blue eyes well with tears. I'm a sucker for the kid, you know! And if it takes a week, it will be the longest week in my life!

When my granddaughter asked, I couldn't say no. I have a cat named Katt. He's been with me for a long time, but like me, he's getting along in years now. Maybe my granddaughter did me a favor, allowing me the opportunity to have another creature to love. Who knows? God works in mysterious ways His wonders to perform.

I'm swinging this over to the Writing about Animals forum. I think you'll get better feedback and the posts could make for some nice research information.

Yes, about a week. As soon as she's done, you can get her spayed. She'll also need a good worming if she's been out on the streets. Any names yet?

I went through this with the first cat I had. I got her from the shelter at about six months old and, as often happens with cats from a shelter, she was sick for a while and the vet didn't want to do the spaying until she was well enough.

Anyway, with mine it got worse each time. At first it was sort of funny, she would get in the floor and "assume the position" and meow. "Sorry, dear, there is nothing I can do to help with THAT!" By about the third time she was climbing the mini-blinds in the middle of the night. That cat wanted a "date" worse than a twenty-five year old Star Trek fan.

Good luck with the kitty.

 Yes, I had a shelter kitty who went through several heat cycles before she was able to be fixed. I was in law school at the time and trying to study for exams with the cat rolling around on the floor at my feet, yowling and hoisting her bottom to the air.

Good times.

Hope Sexy Sadie is done soon. Kudos to you on taking her in. My "found" kitties have always been the best ones.

Finally, Sadie's slowing down. I have a neutered male cat and she spent most of this week begging for his attention. I tried my best to explain that he was missing some of the necessary equipment, but she refused to listen. Now...she is a woman spurned so I expect T.H.E. (Thomas Horton Edward) Katt is in big trouble.

Some vets will spay them even if they are in heat - call around.

I have only seen this once in a friends cat - I feel for you!

I heard one vet I worked for explain to someone how you can trick her into ovulating w/ a Q-tip (don't know that I would try that though....)

Good luck to you!

You might want to shorten that to just Sadie. Else you know what's going to happen . . . your minister will call up some evening and your granddaughter will answer the phone. When he asks for you, your granddaughter will tell him you're out somewhere getting Sexy.

Problem is, when you get her spayed, she may not act the Sexy part of Sexy Sadie, actually I'm in favour of just Sadie. Bless you for taking in the homeless waif!:hooray:

In my area (California) there's an organization that sends coupons for free neutering for feral cats. I found out through Cats in Need. There's free neutering done once a month in Arkansas; a friend used the service. She had to make the appointment a month ahead, before they got booked up. And I've heard there are some vets who give freebies, or discounts, but don't advertise it; don't know if that's true, but worth a try.

I've gotten free shots also, held in a park or pet store; long line of both cats and dogs, so take the kitty in a carrier, not just held in arms. The best-tempered cat (or dog) can get nervous when surrounded by strange critters. Call your local cat rescue organization and find out what's available in your area. :)

My dream in life is to once, if only for 5 minutes... have a woman desire me the way my cat does during amok time.....

Judging from what I've observed during Sexy Sadie's lament, I'm not sure I could handle the strain of such ardent desire.

So how is Sexy Sadie/Hussy?

PS. I once had a cat named Libertine. It suited her. We called her Libby for short.

Sadie is fine; no more yowling, thank God. She's going to the vet next week. My neutered male is no longer in retreat. He can walk across the floor without her falling down in front of him. I hated her being in season, but he got the worst of it, I think. There was just no rest of the unavailable!

That's life, isn't it? A guy gets neutered and then has women throwing themselves at his feet.
