I'm really wondering who else did, on AW

And maybe what we sent them, if people are willing to share.

Mine was sort of thousand-and-one-nights meets south-indian-epic-poem in King Akbar's court. Which is, okay, not Victorian. And there wasn't any steam. But there were clockwork birdies It's steampunk in my head, anyway.

Like Shweta, I wrote an Indian-themed fable, only mine took place in the jungle and in a Victorian colonial house. It stars a peacock, a tiger, and some nasty humans.

Well, okay; there's one decent guy in there.

I wrote one about a clockwork zoo and an escape attempt led by a mechanical green man, but I didn't finish my revisions in time

I didn't know it existed until after the deadline, but it's a nice theme. It'll be interesting to see which stories are chosen.

Belatedly, I also own up to submitting a story to the special issue.

I did significantly alternate history version of John Henry. The question that I asked myself which made the story happen was "what sort of automatons would the Cherokee Nation have built?".

A lot of people did hear back by mid-March. Everyone else has, presumably, made it past the first step.

What we've heard (from querying) is that George Mann has "a good-sized pile" he's still considering, and the decision is harder than they expected because there are "so many good stories", but we'll hear by the end of this month.

A gearaffe who doesn't tick and is trying to overcome her fear of the dark in the vast spaceship ruins on the moon she lives.

I've been told it's more gearpunk than steampunk by a friend. I didn't really know there was a distinction before then.

I have to say, I'm way impressed by all the different ideas the submissions call generated.

Yeah, but my brain is better with gears than electricity, so I'll stick to gearpunk or whatever anyone wants to call it

That would be... all of us. When we do get responses they are going to majorly up Shimmer's average response time on duotrope. Which isn't a good thing, I think, because on the whole they are pretty darn fast.

I finally did break down and send a query. I got a very polite response from Beth Wodzinski saying that the story had passed the first reader test (as have a number of the stories, from the looks of things here) for further consideration, but that said consideration was taking longer than they expected. She did say she was hoping it would be soon.

So sorry, not a lot of new information, I guess.
