For the past several months, I've been struggling to find the best day and time to write. I've tried writing on weekends as well as weekdays. I've tried morning before going to work and after coming home. Then I tried 8:00 PM before trying later at 9:30 PM. I'm now trying to see if 8:30 PM to 10:00 PM on weeknights will be the most productive writing time.

Have you found your best day and time for writing? :)

I write best on the weekends when no one's home, all afternoon. I'm too tired and overstimulated during the week to write much of anything useful.

Mostly in the afternoon. I finish my duties of domestic servitude in the morning, prepare a small lunch for myself and the dog, do all I can toward evening meal then I feel I deserve to do what I want to do. I have a recliner chair on the veranda, classical music on the radio and a jug of water for refreshment. What more could a writer want?

Friday night and the weekend. Sometimes I still have creative energy left after a day at work, but I consider those evenings a bonus as they're not too common. Generally weeknights are for outlining the scenes I'll be working on the next weekend.

It's a challenge when you're writing while working a five-day-a-week job. If I were a successful rich writer, I'd write full time at home. :)

almost all of my writing is done at a coffeeshop, from 5:30 pm to 9pm on friday nights, and 10am to 6pm on saturday and sundays (I have no life) and on weeknights I try to do research.
If I'm really going strong, there's nothing better than midnight to 4 am on weekends too!

Almost every day, 10 or 11pm until 2am or later. This isn't so much my preferred writing time as the point when guilt about not writing kicks in bigtime and I get some words down before bed.

My routine for week days is; wake up at 5 am, shower and breakfast and then write until it's time to leave for work. On weekends I wake up whenever, have a shower, eat breakfast and then write until I can't write any more. I try not to miss any days but surprisingly I've found it's more common to skip a weekend than a weekday.

4 am, every day, till about 7. That is during first draft. Second draft, 5 am.
That leaves the daytime free for everything else. And it means I can get a first draft finished in four months.

I've always worked best after dark, especially after 11pm until dawn, any day of the week. I find it hard to study, much less take exams, in the daylight :) If I'd had a penny for every time I'd wished we had school classes during the overnight hours, I'd be rich.

I always seem to be at my best just before the phone rings.

Seriously, I think my best writing time is between 8 AM and 5 PM. (I'm trying to start a regular writing schedule, and the full-time job schedule seems to be working well so far -- of course, I've only done it one day, so we'll see how long this lasts.)

I try to get some writing done before work, though mostly it's rereading what I wrote the day before and tweaking/fixing. Then I try to write during my lunch hour, whether it's in a notebook or gmail in a free computer. Once I come home from work and I've eaten, I try to sit down and start writing as soon as possible - if I leave it any longer, I become sleepy and choose bed instead, lol.

On days off, I start after a period of waking up and work at it in between getting things done. Of course, add in procrastination, curve balls, etc., and my schedule doesn't always go as smoothly as that, but I do try. I tend to get guilty and upset if I don't write, even a little.

I work weekdays 5:30 a.m. to 3. (And I should leave for work right now.) My wife gets home at 6. I have a two-hour window in which to write, and usually right after work I'm mentally and physically exhausted. However, when I really apply myself, I get some great writing during that time, even though I can't even talk out loud coherently (because I'm so worn out and hungry).

Best times to write for me are on the weekends, provided we don't have anything going on. If I'm allowed to write for several hours straight, I can get ten pages behind me, which is good for me.

Everyone will be different with their most productive times. I think the best thing to focus on is having the same time each day so you associate that time with writing and nothing else.

I write at all different times, whenever i can find the time pretty much. My best work comes after work when I have had an hour or so to unwind, if I have 3 hours to myslef after work that is when my best writing gets done.

My best writing is usually done between 8pm and midnight, though I found last spring that I could get MASSIVE amounts of work done during free periods at school. Funny thing is, I'm really bad a writing on the weekends! I've got time, no wife at home, just me and the dog...and I find that I can never get work done!

Here's a thought, Wannabe:

Maybe you, like me, aren't the kind of person who writes best in small increments, and this is being reflected in the fact that you can't find that elusive 'optimal time.'

What I mean is that I write best whenever I can do it for a LONG time, uninterrupted. I arrange my life so that instead of writing every day for a short period of time, I write in 5 to 12-hour blocks. If I have only one or two hours, I find I can't really let myself dive deeply into it because I know I'll have to drag myself out soon.

If I'm just line editing or something, I can work in small increments, but if I'm _creating_, I need the freedom and space that comes with time.

You could try setting aside a whole day on a weekend and see how that works for you. For me, five hours in a row is _way_ more productive than five separate hours spread out.

To answer your question, I suppose my very best time to write is in the evening or early morning. However, if my chunk of available time falls in the afternoon, I take advantage of it.

Every damn, stinking morning, whether I feel like it or not, I get up an hour or so earlier than I need to, grab a cup of coffee, and go for it. It's become so routine for me that on those rare occasions when I don't do this I feel wierd all day.

Usually mid-afternoon 'til late night. Though I rarely get the chance to write through that whole period.

But in the mornings I find I can't settle down enough to really get moving. I also find it helps to have at least an hour where I know I can work uninterrupted, anything shorter usually results in the "blank screen stare."

You know, I used to have to write only one or two days a week, on my days off. Then I would just mark out whole days for writing and spend like six hours writing.

It's tough to find time when working 40 hours a week, but if you don't make time now, you will never get to the point where you are writing full time instead of working full time.

That said, it's recommended to start smaller and just get in the habit of writing for shorter periods a day. Say, if you can find a free hour during the day and mark that out for writing. Tell yourself that, no matter what, you will write something that day. It doesn't matter if it's good. That will come as you train your brain to write every day. If you make it part of your routine, your mind sort of cues into the fact that it needs to be creative.

The best thing is to leave off when you know what's coming next, or even in the middle of a scene. That makes it that much easier to pick up the next day.

Honestly, I tried to find just a few days a week that worked for me and every time I did that, I would lose stamina. It's easier to skip your scheduled writing time when it's not part of your daily routine.

but it's all about what ultimately works for you and what your goals are. I say set the goals be they pages, word count, hours/week, what have you) and then try out different times/days and see what helps you best meet your goals.

good luck with this! it's always tough to find that balance and make time for writing, but it's definitely worth it!

I work best at night, after the sun sets, whenever that may be (obviously depending on the season). It became cumbersome when I was in England and it didn't get dark till 10 o'clock at night and that's when I'd start my homework but I managed. I just feel . . . odd writing during the day. Perhaps it's because I've been on the same "work" schedule for so long it's hard to break. But I like writing at night.
