Okay -I've had a brainstorm. I'm going to plot each chapter of a book in PowerPoint. In other words, I'll make a slide for each scene with the important ideas and details. Then I can print it out as a handout (6 slides per sheet) and write notes on it, but I can also refer to it when I "forget" some of the details. Has anyone ever tried this? I'm going to try this with an MG idea first (since it's shorter).

Never worked for me. I can't tell a story shackled like that. I have an idea, I jot down some lines and some plot twists I'd like to use, but usually my mss is a product of impromptu writing. I like being surprised.

That's an interesting way to do it. I haven't found the right thing for me yet, but maybe I'll try that out.

My first novel was like that, but I think I want to change that around and find the perfect way for me to brainstorm and plot. While I'm planning, when an idea pops into my head I write a scene, even if it's a scene from a later part of the book.

Sounds to me like you've reinvented the 3x5 index card method using Powerpoint. One tried-but-true way to plot your story is to write each scene on an index card and put them into the "right order." I'm pretty sure it's discussed in the Uncle Jim thread, too.

That's too much work, though, using PowerPoint. I just winged it, myself. PowerPoint wouldn't be "portable" enough.

I think PowerPoint could be used to work the 3x5 index method. I've done the latter, and see little difference in the former. In fact, it would be a good way to keep the "cards" in order, and keep them from having to be constantly erased, scratched out, etc.

(Plus, I could copy and paste without completely rewriting)

Sounds like a fantastic way for me to waste time. :) Well, that and surfing AW.

Just kidding...if it works for you, give it a shot. Plotting just isn't my thing.

I have a pal who did this after-the-fact, to help see his plotting and pacing. He put everything into a PP presentations, color-coded for POV character, rising and falling action, etc.

It was awesome, but I couldn't see doing it myself. I just write a synopsis.

I just make a list in a rough order of what I want to happen in the book and write out each idea until I can't think of anything else then go on to the next idea. I can't see making extra work.

I'm an outline addict and I use note cards as well. I think PowerPoint would be a great way to do this. If you love to have notes on your scenes, don't buy the argument that it will "constrain" you in some way to do this. We all write differently. Find the way that works for you. I'd love to hear how this turns out for you.

Whatever works for you.
Fo what it's worth, Word will allow you to outline the book, and if you use headings in place of your 3x5 PP cards, all the subheads will move with the heading if you decide to change its place in the document....

Or decide to convert the entire document into your manuscript.

This is how I've done my last few books...just to give myself a general sense of direction, along with notes to help remind myself of major things that need to be included.

Not to say I never stray from the outline...it is just a guide.
With an electronic version, it's easy to add and change as necessary.
