While reading through JoNightshade's thread on dinner prayers, I thought of something related. It seems people say some sort of grace at home before meals, but what about when eating out in a restaurant?

My wife and I hold hands (one hand each over the table) and very quietly say our prayer low enough so no one else can hear. I used to be a little self-conscious about it, but I did it because, hey, it's my wife, she believes in it, and if I'm going to get saved, it's going to have to be because she's pulling me along with her.

How about it? Anybody else pray in resaurants? (Some of the restaurants I've been in, it would be a sin not to pray over the food!)

Yes. We don't hold hands but we bow our heads. We keep it brief, but many times we've opened our eyes to see a waiter/waitress standing there patiently waiting for us to be done. Oops!

Not only do I say grace before and after meals at home but I do it in public also. My grace in public is said silently but anyone looking can see me make the sign of the cross. I suppose you can call it a silent witness. I have no way of knowing how others feel when I do this since I have never been approached about it.

We sing our little table prayer, even when we go out to eat. The kids expect it, so it doesn't bother them. Of course, we don't sing it excessively loudly, but neither do we sing it under our breath. It's in another language, so who cares if someone hears it or not :).

I do, yes. I don't usually pray loudly, for much the same reasons you gave, but I do pray before meals in a restaurant. It's not much of a prayer, if you listen to it, and it likely is the same basic prayer I pray at the dinner table. But I do very much want God to bless my meal, not only at home, but when dining out.

:)

That's what we do also, nothing showy but not in hiding, either. And we bow our heads.
