As some of you may (or may not) know, our oldest son Mike, his wife Julie, and our two little grandsons Caleb and Noah have started an outreach ministry to the backpacker/new age culture in Northern California. Our new news
If you are on our mailing list, then you've prabably already seen this. If not, we have moved into a new partnership with Prodigal Project. Cornerstone Int'l has been a huge blessing to us by helping us mobilize and get on the field.
The Prodigal Project has been a breath of fresh air. We've been trying to do this spiritual seeker/ traveler ministry for years now, not knowing if there were others out there with the same vision. We're excited to have found a group of people with the same calling on their lives.
Here's the letter that went out last week. It has an additional letter from the President of Cornerstone.
Dear Supporters,
In January 2007, we were approved to serve for one year with Prodigal Project in northern California with the CornerStone International in Wilmore, KY. Our calling has always been to minister to the international backpacker scene, and two years ago it looked like there was an opportunity opening up in New Zealand. That door seems to have closed for the time being, but God has opened a new one for us here in northern California. We are partnering with a local church to open a coffeehouse-style ministry for spiritual seekers who are curious about Jesus but skeptical of organized religion. At least for a while, we'll be busy here. But over the long term the location and style of ministry could (and probably will) change as backpacker hotspots shift and other opportunities open up. Our ministry title 'Moving Fields' name has become more literal than we could have predicted.
The focus of the Prodigal Project is the 'global nomadic youth' culture, which is another attempt at putting a label on a group of people who steadfastly resist categorization. Backpackers, hippies, new agers, seekers, Rainbows; many names have been applied. Prodigal Project has dealt with the uncertainties of this type of ministry for years, so everyone's used to this lifestyle. They also have a number of open doors for work in several different countries, notably India, with staff already there who have paved the way.
Over the last year it has become increasingly obvious that linking up with a group of like-minded folks who have the same vision we do and pooling our energy toward a common goal is the best way for us to go. So, with a lot of mixed feelings, we have approval from CornerStone to transfer to Prodigal Project as full time staff members working in Northern California.
Thanks so much to all of you for believing in us and helping us 'get on the road.' We would greatly appreciate your continued financial support as we minister to this nomadic “unreached people group”.
