What's your writing 'set-up'?
Mine is this:
I write at a local coffeeshop. It gets me out of the house so I don't get 'cabin fever'. I'm not married and not dating but I still want to get out and 'people watch' as I write. This coffeeshop serves sandwiches, coffee and soft drinks, and beer and wine, so I don't have to worry about snacks.

so, my laptop, headphones (and 20GB of downloaded music to listen to as I write) a glass of wine or a cup of coffee, and I'm ready to go.

And I'm told that there are still those of you out there that write with typewriters, or pad and pen?

How about you?

Living room couch or recliner, my MacBook and usually my dog at my side. Sometimes music, somtimes TV for background noise, sometimes no sound at all, depends on my mood.

Going shopping with Soccer Mom and Bubastes for fu
my study, which is acclaimed in the family as the one room where only Mom dares to tread. My computer desk and a big rectory chair, a daybed (sometimes I have to write lying down because of my back), my bookshelves with all my resource materials, a filing cabinet and two cases of paper and ink cartridges. Only one, maybe two, cats allowed at a time. No TV, no CDs, no recreational reading, tons of red pens. No pictures on the walls, only my continuity charts and maps and, of course the Walls of Shame and Fame.

Good because the married and dating can be a really bad combo. :)

Currently, I write at the desktop in the corner of my bedroom, or on the laptop at the dining room table, the sofa, or my cave-like basement office.

But come July, my new house will be ready to move into and I'll be working in the LIBRARY!!! My own freaking LIBRARY!!! Can you tell I'm excited?

It changes, but I am writing most of this WIP on my laptop in the upper level of my local library. This library just opened last year, and it is the Best Library Ever. It's so beautiful and new and spacious, it just makes you want to read or write.

Also, it keeps me focused and away from the housework. In general, I do housework and any errands in the morning, have lunch, and then head to the library.

i write in my office, which also doubles as the guest bedroom when I'm feeling generous. Medium-sized desk with a hutch, lots of stones and pictures and odd decorations, and shelves with my reference books. Got a nice office chair I can sit cross-legged in while I type. There's a huge bookshelf on the wall, and a fold-out futon. The bed is right next to the desk, and has a sign saying "Bed of Creative Angst" on it in giant red letters. My husband put this there when I whined a little too often about revising WIP#1, and I'm not allowed to take it down until I'm finished with my current WIP.

He's a cruel, cruel man, Mr. Sunna is. :)

johnzakour-

LOL...but NOT the reason I'm now single.

1) Unfold computer. 2) Write.

I bought a laptop so that I could crack it anywhere, and I'm not quite sure how I lived without it. I accept the "You need a special space to write" argument, but it doesn't really work well for me. For one thing, it's not like I can set up The Perfect Office in a garret or the basement - I live in one room and share a bathroom with another guy.

I've even toted the laptop to work so that I could catch up on my E-mail. (Yes, I wait until I've finished all my assignments first. I'm not begging for a pink slip.)

A special place to write doesn't really keep me writing, I'm afraid. (I'm deficient that way.) The only thing that really keeps me sitting here is if the story is going well.

My husband and I recently set up an office in our spare bedroom. My desk faces out the window and is home to our desktop PC. The office also houses about half our library (four large bookshelves), my husband's desk and laptop, a love seat, coffee table, dry erase/cork board, a few posters of Midwestern eco-regions and my writing shrine.

I don't usually write at the desk though. I prefer to write on my ibook. It's much more comfortable to curl up in the love seat and tap away. I do listen to music when I write. I can't listen to anything with English lyrics though- to distracting.

There's a little cafe in town that I like to write at when I get the chance. I also write in the town park, under a large oak on our back acre, at the library and our sun porch.

I have an office/piano room directly off the living room. That's where I've done most of my writing until a few months ago when my wife bought me a Toshiba laptop. I've moved my revision pages to the solarium at the rear of the house (overlooking the back yard, but I keep the curtains closed so I don't stare out the window all day). I now do all my revising and all other writing in the solarium on the laptop.

The laptop gives me the freedom to revise anywhere in the house. Sometimes I'll sit on the couch and work, sometimes on the bed in the spare bedroom. Sometimes in the back yard, if the weather's nice. Sometimes in the car while my wife's driving us someplace.

I've only done Starbucks once, until my laptop battery died.

Wherever I can sit down without people looking over my shoulder. Usually this'll be in a beach chair in my bedroom. I put a pillow in my lap and put a large hardback book or other hard surface on top of it. My bed makes a great place to put pencils, folders, notebooks, reference books, etc.

My ‘studio’ is a rough 8x8 concrete room, that in a former life. I believe. Must have served as a generator room. There are these handy little brackets set into the concrete floor, that after 6 months in this room, I still manage to stub my toe’s at least once a day. My ‘desk’ is a custom piece I hand crafted from 2x4’s and plywood, and as I’m no good with measurements, is to short. So the whole wobbly splinter trap is propped up by more 2x4’s. My ‘writerly throne’ is a white plastic patio chair and is a considerable upgrade from the tattered folding camp-chair I used to use. A least this one doesn't dump me on to the floor if move around to much.
All and all I’m lucky. This ‘grand palace’ is all mine. Which is a good thing, as I am a grumpy Ole bastard, and I don’t like to share.

I used to be crammed into a corner of our bedroom but my daughter recently married and moved out so I have her room. It does double duty as an office for my husband's business as well so there's company stuff on the computer desk. My writing desk sits in front of a south-facing window where there's lots of light. My wall is plastered with pictures pertinent to my historical WIP. All my reference books and materials are lined up at the back of the desk against the wall. My pencils are in a holder that says "I'm not insensitive, I just don't care", I have an electric pencil sharpener and lots of lined paper. My little terrier always sleeps next to my feet and that's about it!

I have a dedicated den with a desktop where I write 50% of the time. Other times I take my laptop and write wherever I feel like around the house. No husband, no kids, all the space is mine!

I have a small room in the house where I can work undisturbed most of the time. I use two PCs one Linux and the other is Windoze. I write in Open Office most of the time but when I go out where I have to sit and wait, such as a dental appointment, I take along a thin three ringed notebook to write in.

Thanks. But as I only have 2 MO left on my sentence. I'm content to remain a hack.;)

And I'm told that there are still those of you out there that write with typewriters, or pad and pen?

Presently, my writing set-up is an old desk with my laptop and printer sitting on it. I still have my old Olympia manual typewriter, and I love using it, but I'm growing more and more fond of the laptop and its versatility.

My only gripe is when I'm typing along somewhere and all of a sudden, the cursor changes position mid-stroke, and I end up typing higher up on a page. That usually takes me a moment to notice, and by then it's pretty much a hassle to figure out exactly what I need to do to correct it.

The desk is pretty small, has drawers on one side, and is made of metal with a wooden top. It looks like an old teacher's desk, with a filing drawer on the left side. Because it's so small, I have to put my manuscripts on top of my printer when re-writing part of a book or short story.

Other than those two main inconveniences, the set-up is pretty easy to use.

:)
