Howard the Duck, the movie, is one of my fondest memories. I never read the comic.

Terribly sad news...one the great innovators of modern comics, blazing the trail for the overdone fanboy praise heaped on Alan Moore, Frank Miller and Grant Morrison.

Steve's early 80s mini-series The Phantom Zone managed to work perfectly within the context of pre-Crisis DC continuity without insisting on a "time-out" so he could fully express his genius.

Gerber was one of the greats.
HTD the comic was a thousand times better than the movie.
It was dark, sardonic..."black nailed" as Terry Pratchett would say.
If there is any humor in mainstream comics today, it's at least partly due to Gerber's work in the '70s.
We hairless apes didn't know how good we had it.
Requiescat in pace, Steve.
