Thought I'd pop in and ask the experts here for input. I am near completion of my dog book, edit stage that is, and I am hoping for your input. When I begin submitting the manuscript should I place and send all the pictures I have within the title or should I only provide a few samples? Few guidelines state what they want outside of a proposal (which I have). I wasn't sure if all the photos would be too much, or if I should send a nice sized selection so the publisher could choose. Your thoughts would be appreciated!
Thanks in advance, Dana

Hi Dana,

Are you talking about whether or not to send photos with your proposal? If so, I'd check each publisher's guidelines very carefully to see what they say about images. Some publishers use their own photographers, some ask the writer to provide images. But if I was submitting a proposal (and not a requested manuscript), I'd just mention that I have photos available upon request and wait for the editor to respond.

I'm sure others will chime in with thoughts, too, so stand by. :)

Hi Anne, Thanks for your input. I apologize for not making my question clearer. I was more concerned with whether to send photos when/if they requested the full manuscript after they have reviewed the proposal. The publishers photos would be of no use as the book is about my dog and her antics, etc. But good point about mentioning in the proposal and/or cover that photos are available-thanks!!! Dana

I'm with Ann. If your proposal refers to the photographs (and I imagine it would) that's plenty. If a full is requested and they make no mention of submitting the photos too, ask at that time if they'd like to see them as well.

I'd absolutely include a few photos and mention that you have more available, for use in the book. Definitely a cute dog, what's the book about exactly?

Hi Shelley, Thanks for your input. The book is a collection of stories about the spectacular life of Hanna, a little Westie. She was diagnosed with kidney disease as a very young pup and her life expectancy was to be shortened. However, the power and character of this little dog led her owners on a journey of living and hope through her courage and tenacity. When faced with two serious illnesses and given days to live, this spunky little dog showed the world how amazing she was! In addition to stories of her life (humor included of course), there is a chapter on her experiences with kidney disease in which we tell her story of an amazing recovery. Of course eventually loss becomes a reality and the gamut of emotions is included. Mostly the book is to support and encourage those who have lost a beloved pet, to recall the miracles and joys their own pets brought to their lives. Ideally it will be a supportive resource for those missing their precious friends. That's sort of it, in a nut shell-hope that gives you a basic idea (I'm still working on the hooks.) Thank you for asking, Dana
