Hey all. Anyone know of any decent small press publishers of fantasy/SciFi? I've been looking but for the most part can only find a few that don't just take your book and 'POD' it and/or market it mainly, if not exclusively, as an eBook. Here's some of a few I've found, but are yet unsure on:

Gryphonwood Press (made submission to them a few hours ago via email)
Scrybe Press (made sub. to them yesterday)
MillerWrite Inc
Old Earth Books
TTA Press (sent email asking their sub. guidelines)
Bereshith Publishing (made sub. saturday)
Sense of Wonder Press
Tyrannasaurus Press (made sub. yesterday)
Bohemian Ink
DoubleDragon Publications (not too sure about their 'paperback' doings, or if just eBooks, but have heard/read some good things)
Avari Press
Highland Press
Invisible Publishing

Has anyone anything to say about any of the above, good or bad? Also, i'm at least looking for one who sells through Amazon.com and prints their novels in paperback WITH any eBook variations they may also do. Thanks!!

I've heard of DoubleDragon and Highland Press, but don't know much about them. Double Dragon's been around for a few years.

Here's a few more known ones from my short list:

Dragon Moon Press
Edge (www.edgewebsite.com)
Medallion Press
Speculation Press (may be closed to submissions)
Mundania Press
Wildside Press
Wizards of the Coast

Why are you aiming for small press?

If you think it's easier to break into print with a small press, it's usually considerably more difficult. They have more riding on each book since they have less money to throw around than a large operation. Some will put out only 4-10 books per year, vs. a large house that puts out 100's. Not many of them deal with S.F. which cuts down your options even more.

Also, (you probably know, but I'll cover it anyway) with very, very few exceptions, an e-book doesn't count as professional publishing credit.

I've dealt with these two small presses and can vouch for them as being professional and honest. They are print book operations, but Yarddog might have e-books.

One of their books, Strange Robby, is on the ballot for a Nebula Award.

They're good people. Both have extremely high standards.

When I sent stuff out the first time around, I started with publishers at the top of the food chain, using Writer's Market to avoid vanity operations and the ones that didn't pay an advance.

The 2008 edition should be in your library's reference section in the 808 area.

Good luck!
