I was wondering through Amazon and I looked around Jules Verne's works.
And in one of them I saw this written about his work.
In this case they're talking about "20.000 Leagues Under the Sea"

"Verne's classic work has left a profound mark on the twentieth century. Its themes are universal, is style humorous and grandiose, its construction masterly."

I can get why the reviewer said universal themes, humorous and grandiose.......but what does he mean by master-like construction?

What makes someone say that?
The way the story reveals itself?
What does 'construction' mean here?

I think they're just saying they like the way he writes.

By the way, I've read this book before. It's more intellectual than action-oriented and it's a hard read, but it's very good.

To me, construction is to build something. We do this with our writing. Each word moves to the next, each sentence does the same and then paragraph to paragraph to the end of the story. Everything flows seamlessly. Everything in the story has a reason for being there and in the right sequence.

That would be my take on it. Of course, he might mean something completely different.

I agree. Construction of a story is how it is built--first from word to word, then sentence to sentence, and so on. They're saying his craftsmanship is masterful.

I'm curious as in what sense do you think it was good?
I felt a mixture of wonder and excitement as I read the book. It drew me in and made me want to read it more than once. That's why I think it's a good book.

I'll be honest with you; when I said it was intellectual, I wasn't kidding. It's excitement derives more from anticipation than physical action. It also has some long descriptions in it, some of which are very technical; this was hard science fiction when it was written. I didn't mind, but some people are put off by that. But one of my sisters has read it, too, and more or less said she liked it in spite of the long descriptions.
