Fictional Flags

The study of flags is called vexillology.

I never thought of doing fictional flags before. Weird, because I go so all out in the detail department... details that never even make it into the story too! Once I had this invading army, and I got stuck in my writing, so I went and created a chart, complete with graphs and drawings, of all the badges and medals worn by the military leaders for my fictional nation. I bought this huge encyclopidia on world military insigniages to get ideas from. In the end I had designed about 200 differant badges and than never included a single one of them in my story! I can so see mysef doing the same thing with flags! LOL!

Being a former herald in the SCA, it's given me a definite feeling for creating the flags/crests of the various countries and independent players in my fantasies. Those that are actually interested in that kind of thing anyway. (It's not like my tomb robber is worried about her own family crest of arms . . . if she knew who they were anyway . . . but it's useful to know who's claimed the area she's pilfering, so she keeps up with the who's who of flags *grin*)

Oddly enough, the whole flag thing came up in my trunked fantasy novel, and I wish I'd have had this info then. *adds bookmarks like crazy*
